Excellent performers. Magnavox made some fine high quality portable
shortwave radios during the late 70s and early 80s. The higher end models rival radios like the Sony 2010 in performance. That being said, it's hard to find a good working D2999 due to CPU, LCD display, and keyboard contact problems mostly brought on due to age. "Michael" wrote in message ... On shortwave it suffers heavy from overloading (cross modulation) during
nighttime hours. Sound it very good because of large loudspeaker. It does not compare to the Sony ICF-6800W. Carel |

The D2999 is a nice set. Very pleasant audio. Great for
hour-after-hour program listening. |
Anyone ever use a Magnavox Philips D2999 ???
I think this radio introduced the "portatop" class of SW radios and
influenced the layout design of Drake's SW8. I have had one of these for several years (bought from someone in this NG, actually). This radio is hard to beat for audio quality due to its two speakers (the 3" one on the front and the 7" one on top). SSB uses the BFO method, which can be fussy to operate, especially on weak stations. I had to perform an AGC mod on mine as there was too much pumping (replacing the AGC cap by a larger one fixed that). If you get one in good condition, and the one on auction appears to be, you will be happy with it. RK |

Thanx for all the posts. I did a bit of reading on the net and found that
it has amazing audio. If you have a good signal, it is fantastic. I've also read that it can overload when used with too big of an external antenna. I may just pick one up.... Haven't decided. Panasonic, Philips/Magnavox and Grundig made quite a number of nice sounding receivers during the 1980's. The D2999 was one of the best in this regard. As I recall, it was described by some reviewer or another as the poor man's Satellit 650 (the Satellit 650 retailed around $1000 in its day). |

My radios directly drive passive bookshelf speakers from Radio shack or circuit city as examples. Simple as can be as most radios have a speaker jack and they sound great. These days I am using Sony speakers, which have a 4.5 inch speaker and a tweeter in them. They were about $20 each. -- Telamon Ventura, California |

its a nice radio but over rated. the sound is no where near that of the
Satellit 600, and the performance is no where near the Sony 6800 orange. I think that even the Panasonic RF-2900 sounds better on shortwave. and on FM my upgraded satellit 800 sounds better. I have one in my collection and I don't think it lives up to the legendary status it has obtained. it is a very impressive radio to look at though ! "Michael" wrote in message ... Right, one shouldn't expect the audio quality of a Satellit 600/650
w/the D2999. The RF-2900 comment is interesting, though. I have to say that I have a soft spot for the RF-2900 and 2600, myself, despite the drift on these models. In terms of size, layout, and technology/features, I guess the Panasonic RF-B600 would be the radio which would be most reasonably placed in the D2999's peer group. I've never owned an RF-B600. I've wondered how it would stack up against the D2999, though... |

I put some radios to the test for sound quality
the RF-2900 with one of my upgraded filters the D2999 my satellit 800 with special upgraded filter as described on my web site the surprising results are that the 800 sounded a LOT better than either of the others !! much smoother and fuller sounding and less noise ! Cuhulin, you had in a previous thread mentioned having a Panasonic
RF-2600, right? Is this what you're referring to? Or are you referring to the Panasonic RF-B600? The RF-2600 had its issues with drift, as did the RF-2800/2900. wrote: High Marks isn't written in stone, far from it,in fact.I own a Panasonic RF-600 AM/FM/Shortwave radio www.google.com DXing.com Panasonic Radios I bought it brand new about 25 years ago at a Service Merchandise store.Straight out of the box, that radio drifts like crazy, tune it to a station and you can see that tuning knob move counter clockwise about one eighth of an inch or more all by itself every single time,I used to stick a thin piece of cardboard like a calling card between the metal ring on the tuning knob and the plastic cabinet to help hold the radio on station. And not long after I bought the radio, the earphone jack worked loose all by itself,I never have used that earphone jack before. The only way I can get the radio to turn on,light up and work is to stick a little thin piece of plastic wedge between the metal outer body of the earphone jack and the plastic cabinet.I do not give High Marks to that radio at all.Frankly,Panasonic radios never have impressed me as far as quality is concerned, especially build quality.Of course it could be my Panasonic RF-600 radio I bought turned out to be a Lemon.Humph! GPX Radios are better than Panasonic radios,in my opinion. cuhulin |

It's generally a nice rx for broadcast listening, very nice sound, easy to operate, well built. But it can't compete with, say, the Sony 2010 for sensitivity and DX performance. You can hear SSB stations, but the BFO is not as good as a true SSB product detector. But, as I said, the D2999 is a very pleasant radio for broadcast listening. In fact, it would probably be my favorite portable if only it had a synchronous AM detector and a carying handle (I hate those stupid carrying straps!). I also wish the display lamp were a lot brighter. This thread has some comments about Panasonic portables. Never owned an RFB-600, but I did have an RFB-65, which was a very nice radio, probably the best built portable I ever had. Performance was acceptable, but again, no synchronous detector. |

Sitting behind my kitchen door,in my den/junkroom is a big rounded top
solid wood "radio".It is very thick and heavy and unpainted. It is about the thickness and height (or a little larger) of a one gallon jar and about one and a half times the width of a one gallon jar if the jar was laying down on it's side.It has solid wood "knobs" attatched to the "radio".I bought it at a Goodwill store about ten years ago.I never do have any problems with that "radio" cuhulin |

Well, I would be surprised if you didn't find better sound quality in
the Sat 800. Three nicely chosen bandwidths, synchronous selectable sideband, etc translate into a better capability in handling incoming signals (what, we're pitting a 1980's Philips/Magnavox portable against the technology of the following decade's Drake SW8!). Couple that with even the stock speaker of the Sat 800, and I would expect a better sounding radio than the D2999. Hey, I very much like my D2999, and I will praise its virtues; it truly IS a nice radio for program listening, in my opinion. But make no mistake, I prefer my Drake SW8 w/selectable sync! junius mike maghakian wrote: I put some radios to the test for sound quality the RF-2900 with one of my upgraded filters the D2999 my satellit 800 with special upgraded filter as described on my web site the surprising results are that the 800 sounded a LOT better than either of the others !! much smoother and fuller sounding and less noise !
