Hi all, I have been looking at some of these newsgroups
for a few years now. There is something I don't understand.
Every now and then somebody posts a radio for sale and says
"I only took it out of the box to test it and then I put it back in the
box".
Why buy it in the first place if you're not going to use it??
Why not look at the spec sheet on the manufactures site, they tested it.

Just curious, I do see this about once a month or so.
Any ideas?

The item may have been a well-intentioned gift that
wasn't needed or wanted by the recipient.

It might have been won as a door prize at a hamfest,
again not needed or wanted by the winner.

Maybe it was won in a raffle (ticket bought to support
the cause, not expecting to actually win the prize!).

It might have been bought on an impulse.

Maybe it was bought while gearing up for a project,
but the plans were later scrapped or changed, and the
item wasn't used.

Perhaps the buyer really wanted Product B but settled
for Product A, only to find a smokin' deal on Product
B right after buying Product A.

I've heard of the rare case in which the item came
from an estate where the buyer died before he/she had
a chance to use the item, and it got sold to an estate
liquidator.

There are probably other legitimate reasons as well.

In many cases, however, I suspect that the seller is
lying, pure and simple.

In reality, it has been in use for months, and he got tired of it.
Having saved the box and wrapping, he uses that "only tested it" line!!

There seem to be a surprising number of hams like this, (Wealthy?) who
buy a new rig, maybe play with it a little bit, then go on to something
else. I've been aware of a couple guys like this in my part of the country
over the past several years.

In my beginning days of Ham radio, there was a guy who would buy H.T.s and
mobile rigs for 2 meters. He would try them for about a month. He would get
as many reports as he could, and give you his opinion. Good or Junk. Then he
would get rid of it to move on to the next. Yes, he sold the "junk" too, as
not everyone agreed with him, so obviously, they'd be happy to get "their"
choice of radio. I have to say, he influenced my first HT purchase choice.
He's now testing radios in radio heaven. Lou

Some people LIE!!!
While it's certainly possible for people to have more money than sense,
it's MUCH more likely that they are not disclosing something. Are they
gonna tell you, "I got it at a swameet and don't know the history?" I
think not.

If it's a really good deal, it's probably broke.
If it's not a really good deal, you can't risk it being broke.

You think this is bad, go to one of the computer sale newsgroups.
Battery is good because the little meter sez 100% (er, uh, three years
ago when I stored it in the attic.)

Before you send me hate mail, let me hasten to add that probably 90% of
the people in the world are (mostly) honest (when there's risk of being
caught). It's just impossible to tell WHICH
90%. The anonymity and lack of accountability afforded by the internet
can skew that number SIGNIFICANTLY. Your neighbor is unlikely to try to
deceive you. Bubba445 in West Virginia?...not so sure.
