Hello,
Is R/S RG6 coax of "decent" quality for a receive only application (to a scanner) ? Or, should it be avoided like the plague, and go to one of the on-line radio supplier sources ? Thanks, B. |

Hello,
Is R/S RG6 coax of "decent" quality for a receive only application (to a scanner) ? If they advertise/sell it as being acceptable for satellite-dish use, I'd think it would be electrically fine for scanner applications. Sat-rated RG6 is normally quad-shielded and has low losses up to above 1 GHz. Pay plenty of attention to how you attach (crimp, probably) the connector on the end, and to waterproofing the resulting connection to the antenna. Water infiltration into the end of a cable is one of the commoner failure modes. Ordinary black plastic electrical tape, by itself, isn't really adequate for the job. I usually use some combination of self-amalgamating rubber tape, and Coax Seal or a similar putty, to ensure waterproofing, and an outer layer of black electrical tape to shield the inner waterproofing layers against sunlight/UV. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Friends of Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |

I know you were intereested in receive only, and a specific brand, but the issues discussed might be of intererest in selection of a cable type and connectors. Owen |
