A discone antenna works very well with this receiver, particularly the ones
with a whip above the cone. It will give adequate performance from medium wave frequencies through to UHF. You may get some breakthrough on some VHF frequencies if you live near to a powerful pager transmitter. A directional antenna and rotator can be used to overcome this sort of interference but with much greater cost and complexity. Try the discone and see how you get on. Get the discone up as high as possible on a mast attached to a chimney above the house perhaps, or on an aluminium pole out in the garden. Try to route the cable by as direct a route as possible to the receiver. Make sure the cables and connectors are of good quality and that all joints outside are completely covered with self amalgamating rubber tape with a layer of insulating tape over the top. Use loctite or similar thread locking compound on the discone elements to stop them coming unscrewed due to wind vibration. This setup should last you several years without giving any problems.
