I just got a TH-F6A and have been reading about the weakness of the
SMA connector. I'm convinced I need to get an SMA-BNC adapter but I have found no BNC HT triband antennas. Are there any out there? The Smiley 270A is a dual band 2M/440, but they claim it will also work on 440? Any experience with that? Also, I have been thinking about Gulyas http://www.wa3hrl.com/smabnc/ SMA-BNC adapter in particular, but then I read this article http://osdir.com/ml/recreation.radio.../msg00041.html It says: "To minimize the stress on the HT, I use the slick little adapter BGA-80 from Steve Gulyas. It uses a special o-ring arrangement that minimizes leverage against the SMA. Works pretty well. Its the best on performance, but too big to be attached to the HT when worn on the belt." Does anyone have any experience with SMC-BNC adapters? Do any good ones allow you to attach your HT youir belt? I'd really appreciate any suggestions you may have! Patty |

Patty I got an 3' long thin coax cable 'SMA to PL-259' adapter at Houston Amateur Radio Supply. Good for mobile work, or via 3/4" dia. UHF lo-loss coax from CableXperts.com up my 50'tower to Cushcraft 6/2/70cm beam, or via RG213/X to the ArrowAntenna.com 146/440 J-pole on my roof. The antennas are also a match on 224, but not much activity on that band. Marv |

I've yet to have to change an SMA. 73 Roger (K8RI) The Smiley 270A is a dual band 2M/440, but they claim it will also work on 440? Any experience with that? If you're putting a different antenna on, what you probably want to do is what a colleague of mine did: find a nylon bushing that's just the right height to support the bending load of the SMA/BNC adapter on that same ridge. Rummaging at the local hardware store he found one that required only a tiny bit of sanding to make it work. Then, he did the usual "two right angle BNC adapters" to further relieve the stress loads. |
