hi, what would work best a, 54.45 feet,with a MHz trap,inverted L, up about

In this particular case, the G5RV might be a better choice. In many other
instances other antennas will far out perform the G5RV and be easier to match across all bands without being picky on some bands like the G5RV is. You'll have fun in either case. 73s, Evan |

With a good tuner you should be able to run on all the HF bands. I have found, in the past, that a inverted L doesn't work very well without ground radials. I experimented with one that was fed at ground level, traveled up for 25 feet, headed east to a tree branch, and then south to another tree branch. Total length was about 96 feet. I first tried to run with only a ground rod but couldn't get a stable match. Then I started to add ground radials. They were just random lengths of wire, around 25 feet long, buried about 1 or 2 inched in the ground. As I added radials the matching became more stable and at around 5 radials everything matched up great and the antenna worked great. When I recently started out on HF these two antennas seemed to be obvious
canditates given the dimensions of my rear garden. I started out with an L of similar dimensions to those quoted by the OP, and later tried a doublet (close to half G5RV ) with an open wire feeder which ran rings around the L. Not a fair comparison by any means outside the context of my garden and given that the radial system for the L was 4 wires on the ground no more than 25 feet in length. My next step is to try a doublet of twice the length with the excess wire at each end being guyed in various directions as necessary . Have any of you experience of this and particularly of optimising what will probably be an assymetric assymetric antenna? John M1JTA |
