Need to buy some kit when in the US and am looking for Ham outlets that will despatch to
my relatives out there, or to me here in UK. Can someone please recommend me some

Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) http://www.hamradio.com/

Amateur Electronic Supply (AES) http://www.aesham.com/

Texas Towers http://www.texastowers.com/

I am sure there are others, but these three are about the biggest.

My personal experience is only with HRO, as they have a shop about an
hour's drive from here.

Having it sent to a US address, and then sent to you, might simplify
things a bit. The first two above will do international orders, TT
will not.

Hi, Nick,

Gary is absolutely right, let the stuff been sent to your relatives,
whatever it is, it is much cheaper over there. BTW try www.gigaparts.com
they have good prices, and they also ship to EU. Then take a week or two off
your work and fly to your relatives to pick it up. The price difference will
pay for your travel.

To avoid customs troubles (not about the customs tax, HAM gear is not
taxable or taxfree) but the CE certification, which the US-rigs dont have,
It is much easier to import the gear by yourself, so you can stet this is
used amateur radio gear, maybe you put a sticker with your callsign on it.

Two OM I am friend with did both things. One ordered a TS2000 from
Gigaparts, delivered within two weeks to Austria, then four weeks of hassles
with the customs about the CE sticker. It took him quite a bit of effort to
put in to convince the customs of the identicality of the US and EU radios.

The other one flew to Hamvention at Dayton this year, bought a TS480 for
less than half the price of Austria, had a great time and imported the
"used" radio with no problems.

Hope that helps for you also, Nick.

Check their store locations on the web. Maybe there is one in a city you are
visiting. Unfortunately, NY is not one of them.

Places that do mail order have an incentive to only have retail
locations in no-sales-tax states. If they have a retail location in a
state, they have to charge the sales tax for all mail orders to that
state. That will increase their sales.

For example, Mass has a 5% sales tax on most items. NH has none. Quite
a few companies have nothing in Mass, but retail outlets just over the
border.

Note that NY City has a 3% sales tax on top of the 5% NY State-wide
sales tax.

In addition to those mentioned by others:

Universal Radio www.rffun.com

R&L Electronics www.randl.com
(I have made one purchse from each of these and had no problems)

I have bought from HRO as well, both by telephone and over the counter
in NH and CO.

HRO has free shipping on most orders over $100. Many others will charge
shipping.

I'm chuckling grin.

Right off of US Route 3 at the NH/Mass state line there is a VERY VERY
large shopping mall. One day, about 2 years ago, I was looking for a
parking place at that mall and driving everywhere in the parking lot. I
had my GPS receiver in the truck. I was totally amazed to find that most
of the parking lot is in Mass and the southern most store is just [JUST]
over the state line into NH [depending on GPS error about 10 feet into
NH]. I judged that the building sidewalk is in Massachusetts and the
outside wall is in NH.

BTW, I live in NH.

When I said "just over the border" I wasn't kidding. ;-)

The town I grew up in was "dry", not allowing any liquor sales. You
could easily identify the borders with the non-dry neighboring towns,
because of the liquor stores. One of them had half its parking in the
dry town, but the door and the cash register clearly in the other
town.

Aren't those arbitrary lines on the map lots of fun?
