Lots of possibilities here... How about a longish piece of wire attached to the terminal and another from the ground terminal (if any) to "real ground"? Or maybe wind a loop antenna on a smallish (say 8") former? Pretty easy...The hardest part is finding a suitable variable capacitor...And thats not hard really...You can order them on the web. I've been making some simple PVC loops. I have a 16 inch circle loop wound on a humidifier blower housing, and I have a bigger diamond loop made from PVC. It's very simple. A 2 inch PVC mast, and 1 inch "actually 3/4" PVC crossarm that is fitted through drilled holes in the larger PVC mast. It's 6 ft tall counting the mount, 5 ft across, and is 44 inches per side. "5 turns". I have switched multi-gang variable caps, and also some fixed value caps for LW, and can tune from about 200 kc to about 2.4 mhz, if I remember right. That thing will blow the doors off any real small loop. But my 16 inch loop works well also. The s/n ratio is better on the large loops, but if the radio is sensitive, even a small one will do ok. I have one simple PVC design on my web site. I made one of those for a guy on the shortwave NG, and he seemed to like it. Was all the standard 3/4 inch PVC, and T's, etc...With that wood mount I made for his, it rotates, and can also tilt. It clamps to his table. All the parts are at any home depot, Lowes, etc.. Well, except the capacitor...I scrounge some from old analog 70's, 80's stereo receivers. They have multi gang caps that are great for MW loops. BTW, my usual radio for MW is my IC-706mk2g. Nothing fancy, but it is a great MW radio for casual use. Has a pretty wide stock bandwidth, and the audio is fairly decent. Much better than some ham receivers with tight stock 4.8 kc filters for AM. I get plenty of signal from either loop for the 706. No preamps needed. My loops are both on the floor on heavy stands, and can rotate. Nothing beats a good large loop for daytime MW... ![]() a local.."I'm in Houston". Also works great at night, but the nulls are not as deep as in the day. Still better than a longwire though for busy freq's. MK SIMPLE PVC LOOP DESIGN http://web.wt.net/~nm5k/loop5.jpg |
