Default Cushcraft MA-5B matching problem

A ham friend bought this antenna. I checked his match with the antenna on
the ground reflector down on plastic sawhorses 2 feet above ground and the
director pointed to the sky. 10 and 15m matched just fine. 12 and 17 were ok
but 20m was way out of match. We reduced the 1st and 3d element tips to 7
inches and have a good match at 14.100 but in the phone portion around
14.250 the match was 4.6:1. When at 8 inches the match was over 6. Does
anyone have any experience with this antenna? I want to be cautious about
cutting the tip portions of ele 1 and 3 so I can shorten the elements more
and hopefully bring the antenna into proper swr range. The band width on 20
is only 90 kHz. Any help or comments would be helpful. BTW Cushcraft has not
yet answered any of his calls.

I suggest that before doing any more trimming that you do everything
possible to get this antenna higher up from the ground to take
readings and make adjustments. You may want to also keep the antenna
in the same orientation as it will be when installed. There may well
be other things in play with your antenna - but these two changes in
your process may help, it has for me in the past; I learned the hard
way and had to un-install the antennas from the roof & used a
temporary mast in the center of the backyard to 'tune & prune.'

Hope this helps,
