I'm looking for ideas for a home built multi band
scanner antenna.
I'm thinking about one with separate whips
cut for each band.

Anyone got any good ideas?

I assume, possibly incorrectly, that it is a VHF/UHF scanner. It would
be much simpler to build a discone -- even just a skeleton discone would
probably do the trick.

You could do worse than a 1/4 wave groundplane for approx 160 MHz. It will
be 3/4 wave on 480 MHz as well and thus reasonably efficient.

1 discone will work at the design band and higher freqs too
no need for multiple antennas

I've got a 2', more or less, antenna on my truck that works REAL nice on
all the bands my scanner will pick up.. I think it's an RT7 or RX7,
somethin like that.. Real nice scanner too.. The antenna has a regular
antenna thread just like a hamstick or any other popular mobile antenna..

Radio Shack sells a multi band scanner antenna that you might look at.
May be able to fashion a copy from it if you're sneaky..

I chose Discone - ***Assuming the antenna needs to be 50 ohms ***
probably any long wire will work as well
