If it doesn't have to be an all band antenna, I would change to a coax
fed half wave dipole. You wouldn't need a tuner,
except to drop farther down the band, and your efficiency would
be high. To work all bands using the ladder line, I would get a
good external tuner. But the coax fed dipole will have the better
signal on 75m by a noticable amount over the jr-g5rv. The internal
radio
tuners are not really meant to match ladder line fed antennas. I
wouldn't
try to load anything over about a 5:1 mismatch with one myself. I
consider
them as "line flatteners" mainly. IE: good to provide a wider usable
bandwidth, with an already half decent match. MK

The problem is a resonant 1/2 wave dipole at the high end of 75 meters
is about 115-120 feet long. At 51 feet, your g5rv jr is less than a
quarter wavelength long at the desired frequencies. What is the
longest dipole you can put up (even if you zig-zag it and make it
crooked)?

G5RV. It was designed to be useful with an easy impedance match only at
14.15 MHz On other bands it cannot be no better, and is usually worse, than
any other random length supposedly multiband dipole.

All you have to do, to obtain the best possible mutliband dipole for your
back yard, is to erect a high dipole of any length which conveniently fits
into your backyard, fed via a 450-ohm or 600-ohm transmission line, of no
particular lemgth. The most important component in the system is the Tuner.
Invest in the tuner. It will last you for years on all bands. Ideally, have
one tuner for 10 to 30 Mhz and another for 1.8 to 7.5 MHz. You wont regret
it for multiband operation.

Yes, easy... Modify it to obtain a Levy and add a Levy coupler.
Forget the direct coax feeding through a CB miracle-black-box. Use a longer
ladder line right to the Levy coupler, the dipole should be long enough.

His is the 1/2 size G5RV, i.e. 51 feet total length, designed for
28 MHz. Terrible for 4 MHz operation.

He wants to use his internal autotuner. Your idea won't work for that.

The Jr. version it too short to use much below 7 mhz. with a SWR the
internal tuner will match. Double the length of the legs for about 100 feet
overall. Beter yet , extend it to about 130 feet overall. You probably
would do beter to hook the wires together and use it as a single feed wire
and hook the other side of the rig to a good ground.
