Hello All
I am thinking of some basic question about LO and I cant figure it out I need your help to give me some explanation so I can further investigate my text book. Say there are 3 signals [frequency at wo-k, wo, wo+k]going into the input of a LO. Then due to the nonlinearity of LO, we get Intermodulation harmonics terms. If wo is the desired frequency while the other two are interferers, my question is at which frequency Local Oscillator will tune at? For any theoritical and practical purposes, what is the method to find the oscillator frequency and/or period? Maybe this question sounds too general. Therefore, if you have any further details to complement this question and doubts, kindly share your views. Thank you rgds and thanks Jason |

Hi Richard and Mack
Thank you so much for the answers and advice. I have cleared much of my doubts. Do you know if Gilbert Cell is using Synchronous Detection or the one with +/-IF? Thank you and hear from you all rgds and thanks Jason |

Hi Jason, The Gilbert Cell was one of the first linear ICs and useful for balanced Mod/Demod. What comes with it is strictly your choice (regarding the question of IF or Synchronous Detection). It would be simpler if you simply said what you need. 73's Richard Clark, KB7QHC |

Thank you and hear from you all rgds and thanks Jason I don't know exactly what you want to do, but I have used the Motorola MC1330 Synchronous Video detector as a CW-SSB/AM synchronous detector at a 9 MHz IF. The MC1330 uses Gilbert Cells. For AM you need an LC tuned circuit at the IF frequency; For CW-SSB you feed a BFO signal (square wave works fine) into the MC1330 at the same point. The DC level at the MC1330 output depends on the signal amplitude; so, that can be used to derive an AGC voltage. Tuning an AM signal is uncanny, in that a signal will sort of pop in.
