Default Recommendations for a Vertical

Hi All,

I have a Hustler 5BTV that finally bit the dust after 25 years. I had my
house painted last year, and the painter's ladder got into an argument with the
antenna a few times, and just about destroyed it. I'm looking for something that
will do at least 80 thru 10--WARC bands would be nice, and if there is one that
also covers 160, that would even be nicer. What do you recommend.

Let me suggest gamma matching the painter and his ladder.

I've had good luck with my Butternut which I've had for about 15
years. Mine doesn't have the WARC except for 30 meters but you can get
one that does do WARC's and even mine can be modified with an
aftermarket conversion kit from Butternut. I have had two occasions to
order replacement parts (a matching section and a "doornob" capacitor
and sevice from Bencher was outstanding...about two days from Chicago
area to Maryland.

Mine is ground mounted. Its been good for DXCC, mostly on 40. 80 meter
bandwidth is quite narrow though, but I have about 30 countries with
it. I think they have another version, a bit taller, which is for 80
and 40 only. I don't remember if they sell 160 coils.

I will probably get flamed badly for this, but, I bought an MFJ-1798A. It
covers 2 meters through 80 meters. I use it with both a ts-440 S/AT and a
yaesu FT-817. I have gotten great reports from both all the way down to 1/2
watt. Mine is "mounted" on 10 ft of mast in the middle of a small city lot
and I love it.

Personally - if you like it and it worked well - I would just rebuild it !
http://www.dxengineering.com/Product...ID=16&DeptID=8

Of course -- it does not work 160 meters and 80 meter has a limited
bandwidth.

It's still made ... gets high marks for a vertical requiring radials.

You may want to look at the HyGain AV-18HT (HyTower) vertical
(not cheap - but great vertical)

My Gap Titan is of excellent quality and covers 10-80 meters. It is 25
feet tall, can be mounted at ground level or elevated and weighs only
25 pounds.

Good luck, jimbo
