Default Homebrew tubes in "200 Meters & down"?

Remember the story about the intrepid lad who gathered scrap glass and
melted it down to make his own tubes? I think I saw this in the ARRL's
"200 Meters and Down" book, but now I cant find the page. Anyone know
where in the book this gem is hidden?

Thanks,

I don't know, but Dr. Rudiger Walz from the Antique Radio Society has
been making handblown tubes since he was a kid.

Bill,

I actually have the paragraph from page 63 in 200 Meters and Down copied and
set in a frame with a picture once run in QST of G5BD, arm amputee, sending
code while peddling a generator. The two snapshots from our past certainly
capture the essence of what ham radio used to be. Sadly.

And if anyone is interested in the G5BD picture (which I had enlarged and
toned in sepia...it's quite beautiful...as well as the short narrative that
accompanied the picture, send me an email and I'll forward it to you.
