Updating a NC-300 and am having a tough time tracking down a 2135 KHz
and 2295 KHz crystal. Does anybody have a source for these guys? Please reply to this group or email to: Many thanks and 73 -Bob KE7GNU |

Each crystal would cost about $57.00!!! Yikes!! Sounds like it is time to kludge up an oscillator. Thanks for your help. -Bob |

I am not familiar with the National -- odd crystal holder? w9gb |

Please reply to this group or email to: Many thanks and 73 -Bob KE7GNU OK, Bob I see - what you are doing (in your update). I just dealt with this issue on my Drake R-4C. Pain in the %@*$ to track down -- I had to replace 5 crystals and 1 carrier oscillator crystal -- that had all drifted badly over past 30 years (looks like the crystal batch from ERIE for this late serial number 27xxx aged poorly). Good news is that 6 new precision crystals from JAN -- and it is running very well again ! National NC-300 Information from Nick England, KD4CPL - Chapel Hill, NC http://www.virhistory.com/ham/nc300/nc300.html http://www.qsl.net/n4xy/rcvr_national.html http://bama.sbc.edu/national.htm First IF frequency is 2215 kHz Second IF frequency is 80 kHz SO, 2215 is the crystal filter and 2295 is the second IF conversion oscillator (that is important ! ) I would guess that 2135 is the other (low side) oscillator. Fairly important and this problem was mentioned in the NC-300 service bulletin (FSN-48) -- circa August 4, 1958 - adding crystal control to remove drift problems !! Entire L6 assembly ( Replacing the entire L6 shield can -- as described in W1FSN NC-300 revision - page 18 of 18) ftp://bama.sbc.edu/downloads/nationa...sn/300fsn.djvu ICM likely has the documentation for that entire mod -- and may be referencing that -- and may be more than you want. w9gb |

I had downloaded the info from bama a long time ago and am just now starting to get the rx into working codition. Xtals are used in upper/lower side band select which replaces L6 assembly. I a surprised to learn that ICM is able to research the NC-300 that well. These guys must be good! |

Freeland founded International Crystal Manufacturing Company (ICM) -- a true garage operation start in early 1950s. He was a great asset to the radio industry. http://www.icmfg.com/ In 1978, Royden Freeland Sr. and his wife were killed in an airplane crash. The ICM operation was then continued by their son, Royden Freeland Jr. taking day to day control of operations. They have a very DEEP knowledge library of radios. They were a staple for the land mobile radio service (Motorola, GE, RCA, Johnson, etc.) and Collins selected them as a major crystal supplier. They have traditionally been amateur radio / experimenter friendly. w9gb |

A high precision crystal (they may do that for this one since it determines IF) My suspicion is that this radio is sufficiently drifty to begin with that using a high precision crystal is probably a waste of money. But I could see someone recommending it, and it wouldn't hurt anything. 2. These guys must be good! They are good, and they have been around a long time. They were making the kits for the NC-300 when it was a current production product, and they still have all the original documentation for everything they ever did. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
