I have a Viking II that the glass in the meter came loose. I'd rather not
disassemble the front panel (since it looks to be a lot of work) to remove the meter which is behind a RF proof shield, so I'm thinking of just gluing the glass in a few spots. What would be good for making the glass stick to the meter case? 73, Bob AD3K |

![]() It's really not a bad chore, Bob. I've had the tuna can off of my Viking II meter several times the last few months. But I understand your trepidation about the chore itself and the Viking II is certainly not a "pocket portable." Short of dismantling the tuna can my suggestion would be to make a "strap" of some highly adhesive tape (like packing tape), bend the ends outward to attach each end to the face of the meter like two flanges. Use any bonding agent that is made for glass (DUCO I have found to be good). Super Glue? Uh-uh. Super Glue is the most overrated glue on the market. They make a version that is "for glass" and it is like trying to glue something with the crust you wipe out of your eye in the morning. Drop no more than a miniscule drop of cement in each corner of the meter opening while pulling on the tape "strap" then secure the strap somehow to keep the outward pressure on the meter glass until the glue sets up. Don't get too liberal with the drop of glue. I also wouldn't try to put a drop at the 12 o'clock upper part of the Viking II unless you can physically rotate the whole transmitter upside down to prevent the drop from dripping across the meter glass which could become a mess to clean/scrape off. In the bottom two corners if it oozes slightly to the southwest or to the southeast you risk getting it on the meter movement...then you have a real problem. Reconsider swallowing hard and removing the meter. Once you disconnect the meter leads the rest comes out and comes apart easily. Good luck. WA9VLK |

You don't have to remove the front panel. The meter shield can be
removed from the rear. Once you get it off, use the correct size spintite and remove the meter mounting nuts and lockwashers. Pull the meter out the front and disassemble the case. The glass retaining collar has probably slipped back and is no longer securing the glass. Once you remove the meter movement, have a look see if that's the case. If the ring is loose and won't secure the glass, you can use a couple of drops of super glue on the inside lip of the meter case and drop in the glass. Then slide the retaining ring in. If the ring is very loose, one can deform the inside lip just a bit at one point to provide some tension. The only thing to be careful of is to make sure the zero-set pin on the case aligns with the zero-set loop on the movement, itself, when re-inserting it. Go to the medicine cabinet and get some dental floss and cut off some small lengths. Slip those pieces into the meter glass and holder. Cut a small thin piece of plastic strip and use it to pust the floss deeper if you desire. If the color is a problem to you , take a soft no. 2 pencil and darken the floss beforehand. Any smears can be easily wiped away with a clean cloth and water. Hope it works. John K4ZYF |

Thanks for posting the solutions to this. My Viking One is exhibiting
the loose glass syndrome as well. Access is much simpler of course, due to the complete lack of meter shielding. In addition to loose glass, the meter face of mine (not the glass) has sprouted a few dark spots, possibly mold, on the white background on either side of the "Viking" and below the meter arc increments. I'm thinking of lightly dabbing those spots with bleach, but I'm concerned about possible damage to the white background on the scale. Anyone have any experience with cleaning up the surface of the meter face?
