I'm almost finished restoring a 1960s Hammarlund
CB-23 base station. The date code on some of the
parts indicates the set was built in 1963 (or at
least those parts were made in '63). I need 3
crystals to complete the electrical restoration:

Y106 = 25.335 MHz
Y109 = 25.375 MHz
Y110 = 25.385 MHz

I'll buy a whole parts rig if I have to, but I'd
prefer to buy just those crystals.

And yes, I'm aware of the multitude of crystal
houses out there, and I've done business with
most of them over the years. I'm trying to keep
the cost down. If I buy them new, those three
little rocks will cost me $45 to $60!

They're the small holders with wire leads (as opposed to
plug-in pins). HC-18/U, I think (or is it HC-25/U?)

With a 25 MHz operating frequency, I'm going to assume
they are 3rd overtone.

Sorry to report that I can't find them! I thought I had several small
drawers with CB crystals of various frequencies. They may be around
here somewhere. I spent about an hour looking for them but no luck.

I will look some more when I get a chance.

the parts bin somewhere that they'll give you to cannibalize for crystals.

Possibly, but sometime around the great trucker phenomenon, the crystal
manufacturers weren't able to keep up with the demand for CB crystals,
and so the synthesized 23 channel CB was born. You will need to find
a CB that was built earlier than about 1975.

I haven't seen a "local CB shop" since about 1975. I must hang out in
the wrong circles. I wasn't aware that anyone tried to make a living
fixing CB's anymore.

radio listed, I'm not sure. I'm not familiar with that particular model. But
I can test all crystals sold for operation prior to shipping - as I have 2
different testers. What I will NOT do, is guarantee them once plugged in.

I have about 6 old 23 channel parts sets here, including an EF Johnson 323
What were those frequency's again, I can get my reader to go back.

Tune to the lower part of the 10M band and you'll hear plenty of them
advertising. There's one that is on rt. 295 in Virginia that can be
heard all over the 6M band with their every-fifteen-minute advertising
message which the broadcast on channel 19 with some sort of mistuned
bandsplatter machine.

I think most of these shops make their money from installation and
modification work more than repair work, but there are quite a few around.
Not like during the CB craze of the seventies at all, but check your local
truckstop.

Hi Guys,

I would be very surprised if you could find the crystals
I need in anything other than the Hammarlund CB-23 (or
the identical Lafayette model that Hammarlund made for
them). The CB-23 used a rather unique scheme of crystal
mixing that I've never seen in any other radio (and I've
been tinkering with CB gear since 1971). The frequencies
I need a

Y106 = 25.335 MHz
Y109 = 25.375 MHz
Y110 = 25.385 MHz

I'm assuming that they are 3rd overtone crystals, since
most crystals above 20 MHz are.

The holder type is HC-18/U (the small holder with solder
leads as opposed to pins).
