I've always thought that sellers should know what they want for an item.
The "make me an offer" bit has always been offensive to me.
In most cases the seller is trying to play on a buyer's ignorance.
Neither do I expect a potential buyer to play upon a seller's ignorance....
It reminds me of used car salesmen saying "what do you want to pay?"

Whenever I've been asked that question, I answer, "Why, zero, of course!"
Then we can begin negotiating....
