Default SP-600 problem?

Hi all. I just got a JX-6 from a guy and he recaped it. It's receiving only
strong BC sigs on every band and the RF gain is inoperative. What do you
think?

I think we need to know if the radio was WORKING before the guy
got into it and recapped it.

Peter

Well, that makes it more difficult! You can isolate the section of the
set where the problem probably lies. The RF gain being inoperative
is a good clue, I'd start by measuring voltages on the stages it controls.
Look for miswired caps, defective new caps, solder bridges, bad or
not soldered connections... a sharp eye, some logic and patience
should lead you to the cause or causes.

Pete

I asked him that and he said yes.

On every band? Rather unusual, but probably because he might have

neglected to
back off the band change knob between bands when he removed the rf deck to
recap that section...........this is a common mistake among the
uninformed..................:-)

I thought you were a radio wizard Brian?

Hi Les. I hope he didn't do that and damage any wipper contacts. I think he
only replaced the easy to get to caps on the main chassis wich may be part
of the problem. Wizard? No but I've worked on my share of radios. Just
thought I'd ask. I figure R.R.A.B could use the topic? Thanks

"wipper"........???? You spell like you fix radios Brian.

Are you sure you are from Minnesota? What in the hell has happened to the
school system up there? It wasn't like that when I attended in Duluth.

You dish it out pretty good yourself Les. I don't remember you being very
nice in some of the stuff you wrote. Discrediting peoples veiws for not
being in the military is a cheap shot but I understand why you would think
that and it may be true with some but I'm no right wing wacko or a war
munger and I didn't start the flame war over politics on RRS. You know the
ones that do. Try not to hold to big a grudge against me. I'm not as bad as
you think. By the way I got the radio working. Thanks for signing my
guestbook and your right I am no SP-600 expert but they are nice radios to
work on. I got a JX-17 awaiting restoration too and its the second one I've
owned. The first had disk caps but this one has those damn black beauties.
