Default Which FT-101 to get?

I am interested in picking up one of the FT-101 transceivers, but there
are so many variants (i.e., FT-101xx where xx can be all kinds of
different letters). Any suggestions where I might look for a
comprehensive listing of what each of those designators means?

Thanks in advance.

From what I remember
101 had nasty drift problems, HV on the PCB often burned up
101B same set improved
101E speech processor added downgraded to crummy plastic switches
101EE less speech processor
101EX less speech processor, less inverter for 12volt mobile TX operation.

Id say find a nice old B

I owned a 101B for twenty years and it was a stable, reliable workhorse. A
very dependable, no-frills radio that always worked when I turned on the
power switch. Sold it off about 10 years ago.

I think most 101 experts may tell you the 101E was the best. It has the RF
speech processor as standard equipment. The proc works extremely well.

One thing to remember: since all of these 101's are now 20+ years old, it's
a real roll of the dice if you get a "good" one or one that is plagued with
a few problems.

Hello from Spain!

101Z and 101ZD models are lots different than 'plain' 101s. In fact,
they are closer to a 901 than to a 101 (I had a 101 and now have a 101ZD
and 901DM and have worken in all three :-) )

Best 101 is later series ZD, IMHO (and they use true RF finals!), but
they are perhaps not 'true' 101s

Check this very good page for lots of 101 series info:
