I am converting an old Marine Radio to a 160 mtr rig. The supply used a
transformer with a 100CPS vibrator. Can I use the transformer that came with it on 60 CPS AC? Tnx Carl -- Carl WA1KPD Visit My Boatanchor Collection at http://home.comcast.net/~chnord/wa1kpd.html |

Some transformers have enough engineered leeway to allow operating at lower frequencies, others will quickly overheat. Try it and see, watch the transformer temperature closely.. Pete |

Pete I ran an old RCA Carfone that way back in 1972. Scrounged up some big filament transformers (and put them in series for 12vac), and connected them to the Carfone's power supply where the vibrators fed their transformers. I recall the Carfone's transformer did get fairly hot, but I never had any problem doing it. Michael VE2BVW |

Build up a solid-state 100cps multi-vibrator to do
it right. Much easier than you imagine and it will remain a mobile rig. -- Dj On Sat, 9 Jul 2005 16:45:31 UTC, "Carl WA1KPD" wrote: I am converting an old Marine Radio to a 160 mtr rig. If you are lucky, one of them may work. Ask Gary Tayman on news:rec.antiques.radio+phono for information about them. He restores old car radios for car collectors. -- Link to my "Computers for disabled Veterans" project website deleted after threats were telephoned to my church. Michael A. Terrell Central Florida |

The 100hz was a squarewave & there'll be enough core for your 60hz sinepower. It's the radio units running 400hz & such that are problematic & far too undersized. But if I were you I'd scope it with the vibe under load first to be sure its really a 100hz (or so) supply - I don't recall seeing a 100hz vibrator though there are a lot of other things I haven't seen, too. You'll also have some filter L/C issues to think of, or at least check, and there are hash components you can get rid of. If the buffer cap's good I'd leave it in for handy transient protection. |
