: Well, folks pay $20,000 for perfectly boring mid-level Hondas & VWs. At least, when you re-sell the Collins, you'll get your 20 grand back, and then some. So it's basically, free :-) bob k5qwg So far no takers. BUt then there are 5 days and a bit to go yet. Problem with it is it is a REAL boatanchor and I'd have to hire a n 18 wheeler to get it here + I'd have to build a new house to use it !! -- Panzer |

Folks, if you want to invest, get yourself some nice, safe, not to mention unbreakable-and-non-rusting bonds or mutual funds. Anybody who buys radio stuff (of which I have way too much) for investment purposes is in serious need of professional therapy. If I had bought $15,000 worth of MSFT in 1985, I could probably buy the world's supply of KW-1s and then cruise off in my spoiled-brat boat from my condo on St. Barts for a vacation in Hawaii. If I had bought one of these for $15,000 in 1985 and could now sell it for $20,000 (figuring in storage fees etc. as needed) , well . . . you do the math. Maybe I could buy a medium-sized plasma TV. Not the most thrilling return for a 20-year investment. If you like old radio stuff, buy it for love, not for money. And don't bet your retirement or your kids' college money on it :-) Regards, Phil Nelson http://antiqueradio.org/index.html Oh, there's far better paper than MSFT. Consider "Fantastic Four #1", now a major motion picture. That cost 10› at one time. How old were you in 1961? How many of you had a copy of "X-Men" #1? What happened to it? According to the current issue of "Overstreet", the comic book price guide, those two together in near-mint condition are over fifty thousand dollars. -- |

The ones who pay $20,000 are buying them to send to antique collectors in Japan for even more! You can always pay more for anything on eBay. Friend of mine had one since 1955; I had the pleasure of using it on AM phone and CW. He sold his in '97 for around 15 grand to pay wife;s medical bills. It was absolutely pristine and a fine piece of equipment. Collins collectors, indeed, pay premum prices for KW-1's. 73 Jerry |

I rest my case. It didn't sell. It's almost 20% of my house cost.

Hey Mike - K5VSE
Formerly WB6VSE, senior tech, amateur division SBE/Linear Systems, Watsonville, CA What's the story on the SBE-36 ??? Someone has told me it was made by Robyn in Japan but sold under the SBE name. Also wondering why they used Nixie tubes when some LEDs were available in the early 70's. I think Signal One CX-7 was the other rig that had nixies but switched to LEDS. Just curious as I just got one. Seems to work as good as a Collins without the $20k price tag. :^) - Biz WDØHCO |

Have a great day! -- Mike-K5VSE No harm intended, but you may, indeed, find that it wouldn't sell--except to a small, select group of collectors. Twenty grand IS a lot of money. However, they haven't gone up, either. KW-1's were listing for 20 thou' back in '96, so it means the price has reached saturation. It doesn't mean that the price is outrageous or somehow has something to do with Ebay. 73 Jerry |
