Does anyone have a dial stringing diagram for the Hallicrafters S-20R
that they'd be willing to share? Working to restore a S-20R right now and have a schematic and other documents from Bama and other sources but no dial stringing diagram. Thanks. |

ups.com... Does anyone have a dial stringing diagram for the Hallicrafters S-20R that they'd be willing to share? Working to restore a S-20R right now and have a schematic and other documents from Bama and other sources but no dial stringing diagram. Thanks. The S-20R Sky Champion ! Phil Nelson can likely tell you. He usually can be found at: rec.antiques.radio+phono Here is his S-20R restoration http://antiqueradio.org/halli10.htm http://antiqueradio.org/magiceye.htm Other links http://www.dxing.com/rx/s20r.htm http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~postr/bapix/S20R.html Ken also had to deal with the restringing (4 hours to figure out)! http://w2dtc.com/s-20r.htm |

Hey, thanks for the compliment. My schematic doesn't have a stringing
diagram, either, so I peeked inside my S-20R and came up with this drawing: http://antiqueradio.org/art/temp/s20...ingdiagram.gif It's designed to print on a single 8.5x11 sheet. (And yes, I know I'm lousy at drawing :-) Where it shows "so many turns" for a shaft or pulley, that means wind the string around the shaft or pulley the indicated number of times. The strings attach through a little hole in each big pulley. Obviously, the job will be much easier with the chassis out of the cabinet. Before you start, clean the shafts and pulleys with rubbing alcohol at the places where strings will go on them, and make sure the mechanics are properly lubricated (but don't overdo the oil). It may look confusing at first, but should make more sense when you begin stringing. Don't be discouraged if it takes more than one try. It's tricky to get a string exactly the right length and tension, etc., on the first shot. And nothing is more disheartening to do a perfect job of stringing, only to find that the dial is moving backward because you reversed something. If anybody has a source for a factory diagram, I'd love to hear about it. Regards, Phil Nelson Phil's Old Radios http://antiqueradio.org/index.html |

It looks similiar to the layout of the dial stringing diagram which came in the Hallicrafters S-40A service bulletin. The Service Bulletin dial stringing diagram is incorrect for the S-40A, which caused me a bit o' irratation. The bandspread dial cord was broken when I got my S-40A, but I eventually got it working correctly. I've posted a scan of the Hallicrafters S-40A dial stringing guide to the alt.binaries.pictures.radio group. Frank Dresser |

It does look similar, except the S-20R has two little guide pulleys to the
left of the two big pulleys. Restringing can be a real IQ test on occasion. Try an SX-28 some time, where the machinery is much less accessible. And in addition to the dials, there are strings to move the little band-pointer elevators up and down. I get a headache every time I remember restringing one last year.
