Camarillo-based Salem Communications Corp. is buying WKAT-AM (1360 AM) in
Miami from Classical 1360 LLC for $10 million. Salem is a radio broadcaster focused on religious and family programming. After closing on the Miami station, Salem will own 101 radio stations, including 62 stations in 23 of the top 25 markets. This will be the company's entrance into the Miami market. In addition to its radio properties, Salem owns Salem Radio Network, which syndicates talk, news and music programming to over 1,600 affiliated radio stations; Salem Radio Representatives, a national sales force; Salem Web Network, an Internet provider of Christian content and online streaming; and Salem Publishing, which publishes Christian-themed magazines. Last week, Univision Communications Inc. said it plans to exchange four radio stations that serve the Chicago, Houston, Sacramento and Dallas markets for assets of Salem stations in the Chicago and San Francisco areas. http://losangeles.bizjournals.com/lo...ml?jst=b_ln_hl |

On a very vaguely related subject...
The Canadian Radio-television and Communications Commission (CRTC) has=20 denied an application for a new 14,500-watt religious station in=20 Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. (near Peterborough) "The Commission finds that the supporting intervention filed by Salem=20 raises several questions with respect to the financing of the proposed=20 undertaking, particularly regarding the source of funding for the=20 installation of the station=92s transmitter. The Commission would have=20 expected this information to have been filed by the applicant as part of=20 the application process." Salem had agreed to build the station's transmitter facility and lease=20 it back to the licensee; they then filed comments supporting the=20 application. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/De...db2004-455.htm --=20 Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |
