Probably - the smaller stations probably still have one, and the newer ones may have it as a backup if they still maintain an analog program STL feed. Can it be used for recording...? Why would you want to? Ruff....value these days....? Tell you what...if you have one, and $200 to go with it, I'll take it off your hands. Thanks..........Mike Sure. Sorry to abuse your curiosity, but these boxes are some 10-20 years old, and they're really designed as the final link in a broadcast audio chain. Good in their day, today's technology (DSP, mostly) has far outstripped the previously-novel way that this machine dealt with clipping and compression artifacts. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there's nothing that offends you in your community, then you know you're not living in a free society. They were made between 1975 and 1980, so they are actually between 24 and 29 years old. There was a recording studio version made called the 418A that used the 8000's audio processing but with user-selectable pre-emphasis and no low-pass filters or clippers. It can be useful as a vocal limiter. In general, these units will require replacement of the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, particularly the ones located close to the power regulator transistor heat sinks. If this is done periodically, they seem to be more or less immortal. Bob Orban |

I know this is a personal question, Bob, but do you go in for a re-cap every ten years? Thanks for a lot of great designs over the years. Long may you run! Mike T. |

Hello................NG Does anyone know anything about the Optimod 8000A...? It's a multiband compressor combined with a multiplex stereo generator. Anyone still use it ...? Some stations still do. If you aren't hitting it hard, it's fine for a station that isn't trying for extreme loudness. The 8100 gives a little bit better modulation but not by all that much. Can it be used for recording...? Not really, because the output is a multiplex composite signal. Ruff....value these days....? I dunno, call one of the used equipment brokers. Harris-Allied's guys always have some in stock. They are pretty common. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
