The problem has been major across the upper midwest with these.
R B Schools ('radio broadcast') is by far the most active, with applications in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and most recently, Utah. They are trying to get share-time agreements forced on small high school stations. They are from the Fort Worth area, and are said to have strong religious ties. The other one is Hoosier Public Radio. They are trying to hijack seven or more stations near Indianapolis. It's well-known they are involved with religious broadcasting. Some of the better school stations are actually managed by veteran broadcasters who help the students learn the ins and outs of running a station. At one of the two left in Utah, they have had graduates go on to get work at major group owners in the area. In fact, I heard that one of them got a really decent job at KENZ 107.5 (now 101.9) a well-known alternative station in Utah. Living Proof owns their own stations, and is said to have just signed on a Phoenix rimshotter, KCOO 89.9 Coolidge. Haven't confirmed it yet, but it could be an Air1 station. As far as I know they are not even remotely involved in the share-time hijack cases at all. |
