Why did you put it on top of the dash?

Yup I put it smack in the center,on top. They put a large well there, I
guess to throw change and stuff in. The Cobra fit right in. no bolts or
screws.

Just put a piece of paper over it, or anything that is white; napkin,
whatever. It will keep the unit cool as the black of the case won't absorb
the suns rays that way. Hell, if you aren't real concerned about the looks,
you could spray-paint the covers of the radio white and significantly reduce
the problem...

Personally, I wouldn't leave any type of dark colored electronics in direct
view of the sun. It will certainly shorten it's useful life. Instead of
the radio lasting 15 or 20 years (or more), it may shorten it's life to like
maybe, 7 to 10 years. The heat won't kill it immediately, but it will
definitely takes its toll on the electronics inside. The most likely
problem you will see first will be broken solder connections. This is due
to the expansion and contraction of the components inside which is caused by
the constant heating and cooling of the unit.

I certianly wouldn't recommend mounting any electronic device on a
dashboard. The temperature inside of car can get to dangerous levels for
electronics during the summer. You'd be better off mounting it somewhere
that gets shade most of the time.

It's small enough to put down by the seat with a bungee cord
for cripes sake. Move it.

Guys I would have liked to put it in the dash, I have a 2004F150 STX. The
dash has no room in it, and there is no under it. The only place was at the
very bottom of the center console, but the stick for the 4WD is right in the
middle, and if I could get it in the space at all. whats left behind is
still not deep enough, I have taken it apart to check, befor I made the
decision for the top of the dash. I'm not a complete idiot, and for you
STEVEO. BUNGEE CORD MY ASS. DO THAT HILBILLY STUFF IN YOUR TRUCK. I WANT MY
