Hello All:
A weather update and skip condations report, From the Mojave Desert. Very cold winds and light rain last night, with some light hail, and even some snow flakes. Light wind and rain tonight, with the wood stove running all night again tonight. Listening in on the scanner the Highway Patrol was closing some mountain roads as tow trucks had to remove several cars today out of the mountain roads. Skip did not allow the CB Radio to work for local communications, but the 2 meter ham band was alive with emerengy use today. The skip died down this evening so now we have two locals in modified hot rod Jeeps out there mountain toping talking on the radios to all over the High Desert, and into the Los Angles areas. Hope they can get down as tempatures will certainly drop below frezzing to night in the mountains. This will certaily be heavy jacket wearing weather. And its a good call to stock up on canned food, Gas, fire wood, long underware, and what ever else you would need, should we get snowed in again, and such from Miss Dinah's Fillin Station, just down the road ah ways. The snow reports and local road condations will be on channel 12 and 15, with some guys sneaking off to Lower 38 and 40. Early in the morning. From about 4 AM to 7 AM. Jay in the Mojave Catch me on 12 or 435. |

Hello Starlord:
I know that corner really well. Once in a while I will go thru the Frosty Freeze for lunch and a drink. Get Gas accross the street, and haul on out of there. If you keep going east you will run into Mohawk Man, and Lady Wrestler who live in one of those traier parks. Haven't heard them on in a long time tho ?!?!?!?! Why would you want to be looking at the sky when you find a desert lot somewhere having a fire and a few friends over??!?!?!? We use to have Star Gazing parties at one time. I never really got into looking at all this stuff but find it interesting. Are you on channel 12 AM, or SSB lower 38, or 2 meters? Lots of guys now going to 220 simplex, but I don't have a 220 radio in the car now. I started stargazing when I lived in Palmdale in the early 60's and had a
dark sky that had countless stars in it. Never had a good telescope until the 90's. After reading about one John Dobson, I have followed his way as I am a 'Sidewalk Astronomer' and it is my mission to bring the wonders of the sky above to those who have never taken a bit of time to stop and look up. If my sore feet ease off a bit today and the asprin tone down the hurts, I may be up there tonight as I was last night. It is wonderful to hear the ah's and wow's of not only kids, but grown ups to as they see the moon for the first time in a telescope or see the rings of Saturn for the first time in their life. I know of a place where I can go and be alone and in the full dark to view the faint fuzzies of other galaxies, or look for the places where new stars are being born. And a fire would destroy my night vision so no fire near the scope. Right now I don't have a radio in the car, not sure how long I'll have this one, am kind of working on a deal that if gets done, I might end up with a S.wagon of the same year. I might put a simple mag mount on this one if I put a radio in it. But after the last 3 days I'm flate broke and can't do anything. Me and the owner of foster freeze don't see eye to eye, he's tried to have me removed from my spot, but even the cops say I'm within my rights and will not even come any more on his calls about me. Heck they stop by to have a look see now and then, they all know me in Rosamond. Been doing it almost 7 years here. Plus the radio I have is only an am one and have not been able to hear the local chatter just yet. Hello Jim:
Yeah the weather here in the Mojave Desert can be really strange at times. The weather in Vegas can get rainy and have a lot of lightning at times while most other parts of the Mojave Desert are clear and warm. I have seen it here get below freezing (Brrrrrr) for almost two weeks. I had my pipes freeze once, and had to replace the 60 dollar pressure regulator, during the day when it got up to 30 degree's. Man was that a cold winter. It even happened in March. I worked a construction job near Vicorville once. I work in heavy construction machinery. We had an electrical problem in a heavy road grader once that throw everyone a curve. It was a Cat 16G Grader, or a Super Grader as it had a really wide blade on it for open grading of a new highways and such. This thing kicked some major a$$ when it was NOT running and of course things got behind schedule, because this kick ass, no ****, 5 star gold plated, Super Duper Grader wasn't running, or would only run long enough to get in the way. Man did the ol man (the boss) blow a gasket over that one!!!! Because it wasn't out equipement, we rented it! So we worked day and night to get to run again. We audited the main wire harness, and figured some repair mechanic or welder doing a repair damaged a few wires causing several electrical intermittent connections in the electrical system that allowed the Super Kick Ass Grader to be a large in the way obstacle. After a new ignition switch, Starter Solenoid, Starter, Alternator, and all new wire harness to the engine this baby was ready to Grade to China. So the Boss had the Grader Drivers and crew out there on a Sunday, and work at night, to make up for lost time. During the night and early morning it snowed, rained, blew like no tomorrow, and during the day was nice, didn't need a jacket. To make a long story short, you had to be ready for anything the weather would dish out, as we got it often. I don't think the weather in Alaska counld be that bad. Well, it depends on the weather, wanted to go last night, but the winds came
up and they didn't die down enough until way late. It looks like tonight will be ok IF the winds don't get bad again, they are saying rain saturday night, which is always a IFFY deal for out here. If I go up to the corner tonight, it may be the last time for the next 2 weeks until after New Moon. Once Saturn starts coming up sooner, then I'll be out there more, but that'll not be until after New years most likly. As it is, I got my car running again, otherwise I wouldn't have been going anyplace at all. -- The Forgotten http://home.inreach.com/starlord/forgotten.htm SIAR www.starlords.org Telescope Buyers FAQ http://home.inreach.com/starlord Car Fund Page Update http://www.bishopcarfund.netfirms.com/ "Jay in the Mojave" wrote in message ...
