I'm not out to flame you, but I just took a look at your website. You claim
your amp with 2 2SC2879s will put out 387 watts PEP. Yet Toshiba's data sheet states that this transistor is only rated at 100 watts PEP each. Even Texas Star, who over rates their amps is only claiming 350 watts for a comparable device which has more features and is $90.00 less. Not to mention, yours looks like it was made in your garage. Your web site even has conflicting data. You claim 60% efficiency in your specs, yet your RF amp basics link states class AB to be 45%efficient. |

All good questions...
The Toshiba datasheet "characterizes" that device at 100W PEP. That's a conservative level, and it doesn't mean the output is limited to that figure. My ratings are given at the 1dB compression point. That point is kind of a standard in RF amplifier circles as a point where lineararity degrades to an unacceptable level. The link states that the "approximate efficiency" of an AB biasing scheme amplifier is 45%. That number certainly has some latitude based on the level of bias and is highly dependent on the quality of impedance matching. The 45% is based on typical products available to you out there. As for Texas Star... they have a pretty good product in the amp arena. Since they mass produce, they can certainly offer their product at a lower price. However, the quality of their components and overall workmanship is often not optimum. The SkyWave design has some features that others don't offer. These may not be obvious but for those operators who are concerned about low harmonic content and high reliability... these features sure help. Agreed, the SkyWave is not for everyone... and hasn't been designed as such. I'm glad to see that you have taken interest in this topic. Hope that helps. Professor www.telstar-electronics.com |

Professor www.telstar-electronics.com It certainly helps. I disagree with Texas Star having a good product. I have owned several of them over the years and I am not impressed. I ordered a 667V and there were parts not even soldered to the board. |

LOL... like I said... texas Star and others have their quality issues.
I noticed that you commented that my amps looked like they were built in a garage. Well... you're close... the basement... LOL Hey, before you knock the looks of my amps... take a look at some of the others out there... inside and out. I consider most of these amps nothing more than prototypes. You be the judge. http://www.amateurlinearamplifiers.c...&action=search Professor www.telstar-electronics.com |
