Here in the Hawaiian Islands we have a statewide packet net, but the
software used "TheNet & APRS" dont seem to use standard world wide type cmds. The Nodes have rptrs on tops of Mt Haleakala on MAUI and MT Maunaloa on the big island of Hawaii. It seems to use a set of Alias's for the different nodes. In other words if I connect to the alias "maui" it instantly connects and offers a "talk" cmd and if someone in Maui also connects at the same time as I, then they can invoke the TALK cmd and actually communicate with each other. The big problem is that with their software, there seems to be no way to Digipeat between two rptrs. I/E :c mloa via maui. Their software does'nt seem to support this hip hopping between 2 diferent rptrs. Anybody have any ideas on where I might search out TheNet and/or APRS software cmds and what capabilities they offer. Joe KH6JF (long time user of packet with MARS). If you connect to MAUI first, issue the command "c mloa" and it will make a level 3 connection to the MLOA node. TheNet commands are nearly identical to those of the old NetRom nodes. You can find more info at http://www.legitimate.org/iook/packet/jnos/thenet-ops-1.htm. There is a user guide in the TheNet X1J archive ftp://ftp.ucsd.edu/hamradio/packet/thenet/x1j4tnc2.zip. There are many versions of APRS software and each probably has it's own peculiarities. If you are running a version of APRS software, it should come with some applicable information (it's not a command-line mode). Bob N7XY |

Thanks Bob for the info. Bookmarked both your URL's, but the 2nd one
only offered to "download a file and save to disk" which I did but dont know if will be able to read the type text file that ensued. I use a Commodore128 exclusively on the web, and with a cshell type of acct I can only handle ASCII or HTML text files! Joe That's a zipped file (containing some text files, among others) so unless you have some sort of expander you won't be able to read it. Bob |

Bob I did download the zipped folder but it messed up my
home dir and had to delete the whole thing. Will try the other url you gave and see if any luck there. I did follow you advice about TheNet by doing the following digi to digi. :C maui (in cmd mode) once connected to maui, I did this c mloa (thats another digi on big island alias mloa!! Voila it worked. I did'nt have to revert to cmd mode with the : in fron of the cmd. Just C mloa did the job. So now if can find the alias for Oahu I can do that same proceedure. Joe A 'N' command should list any available nodes. I haven't talked through a node for several years and my memory is a bit fuzzy, but there are other useful commands as well. I put the 'user guide' document from that zipped file on my ftp site and you can get it from the ftp://n7xy.net/Thenet.txt 73, Bob |
