Hello to everything!
Here is the DX hunter! VP6DX is on air! from the 2/11/2008 - 28.02.08 on all tapes in CW, RTTY and SSB The conditions to the DUCIE ISL. are nich the best ones, however, it already goes. I already succeeded you on 20 ms SSB; 40 ms CW; to hear 40 ms SSB and 20 ms RTTY more or less well! de SWL-9973 |

VP6DX is on air! And really loud. I managed to work them **from the mobile** on 17m CW this afternoon. And on 12m CW yesterday morning. Still need 'em on the low bands. |

It was amazingly easy to work them on 80, 40 and 30 from here on the left coast. As a matter of fact, I worked them on 80 both CW and SSB barefoot using a 40m vertical. Otoh, I never heard a beep on 12 and 10, but that's probably because my BigIR is ground mounted. In other news, it's been interesting to watch the DX Cluster spot assault and full-scale war about YU8. With all the hoopla about this being a new entity, I don't see how this is ever going to happen considering the criteria: -------------------------------------------------------------------- An Entity will be added to the DXCC List as a Political Entity if it meets one or more of the following criteria: a) The entity is a UN Member State. b) The entity has been assigned a callsign prefix bloc by the ITU -------------------------------------------------------------------- I am not an expert on international politics, but it seems to me that Russia will veto any attempt to admit Kosovo into the UN, and without the UN membership, is there a way to get a prefix block assigned by the ITU (this being a UN agency)? And even if any of this happened, if the 4O entity is any indication, Kosovo will be a "new one" starting the day it is admitted into the UN, not the day they proclaimed independence (unlike S5, 9A and E7 before). 73 .......... With high power - I normally only do QRP for this contest. Heard them on 10, but VERY weak. Probably could have worked them on high power. 3-el Yagi at 65'. I see they're on 80 right now but only working EU. I'm going to guess that'll end fairly soon when the sun comes up over there. They're also spotted on 160 & if they're as loud as they were during the contest they should be workable. If you can't get a prefix block without being a UN member, then there's no point to criterium b)? E4 (Palestine) would be a good example of an entity that has an ITU prefix block and is a DXCC Entity but is not a UN Member State. If you look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_..._member_states there seem to be some other entities whose prefix blocks predate their UN membership. Andorra (C3), Tonga (A3), Monaco (3A), and Kiribati (T3) would seem to fall into that category. There are probably more. Why those states took so long to join the UN I have no idea. |

Come to think of it, I worked them from the mobile on 17m last week as well. If you can come up with a radio and a few feet of wire, I'd bet you can work them. |

And it's routine for me to put down one hobby and pick up a different one for anywhere from 3 to 18 months; most of the time I've been here I've been playing with cameras (and learning linux on my laptop) instead of playing with the radios. Lately I've thought a few times that a small power supply and my 706, plus a hamstick out the window, might give me some fun on PSK31 ... next time I'm back in NC I may grab a bit of radio gear. Back about 5 years ago I did a bunch of mobiling, when I first got that 706. Did some on 20 meters, had a lot of fun, bought a Hamstick for 15 meters. I put it on the car, and my first contact was French Polynesia (FO) for a new country. :-) Man, THAT was a thrill! Now that i think about it, I bagged a handful of new countries from the car that summer--Swaziland, Austral Is., and Chagos, that I remember, plus Fr Poly. :-) Maybe I *do* need to bring some radio gear next trip. :-) _______________________________________________ Ken Kuzenski AC4RD atsign mindspring dotsign com _______________________________________________ All disclaimers apply, see? www.duke.edu/~kuzen001 |

There have been sovereign countries that existed for centuries, yet did not seek the UN membership for whatever reason. Their sovereignty, however, had never been disputed. The problem with Kosovo is that if the UN does not accept it (due to the Russian and Chinese veto, or Serbian objection, or whatever else), there is no legal ground on which it can be assigned a prefix block. It would be interesting to know whether the membership is granted by the member-state vote and whether the permanent UN Security Council members have a veto right in such issues. Yes, even HB9 joined as late as 2002. When you're neutral and serve as the world's piggybank, there is little need for the UN "protection" (we all know how effective the UN is in protecting people). HV is not a member either. 73 .......... WA7AA |

But isn't that pretty much the same as the situation as with E4? (the primary difference being which Security Council member would veto UN membership) It would be interesting to know whether the membership is granted by the member-state vote and whether the permanent UN Security Council members have a veto right in such issues. I did some digging around and best I can tell, the Security Council *does* have a veto with regard to new members. |
