As always, you never know - "Work First Worry Later" (WFWL). 135th HPM BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY. Many stations will be active on the air to help celebrate the 135th birthday anniversary of the League's co-founder and first president Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, who was born September 2, 1869. Look for ARRL Life members and League's elected and appointed volunteers and officials to append /135 to their callsigns. The HPM/135 event begins at 0000z on Thursday, September 2nd, and concludes at 2400z on Sunday, September 12th. While W1AW has been appending "/90" to its callsign to mark the ARRL's 90th anniversary, it will go with the /135 identifier during the birthday celebration period. A certificate is available by working at least 25 HPM/135 stations and submitting a log extract including date, time, band, callsign worked and exchange for each /135 contact. This certificate is endorsable in increments of 25 contacts up to a maximum of 100. Details are also available on the above mentioned Web site and QST. 3D2, FIJI. Mark, KM6HB (ZK1AHB) will be active as 3D2HB from Viti Levu (OC-016) from August 30th to September 7th. Activity will be on 40-6 meters with 30 meters RTTY as a priority. Operations will only be 100 watts into a vertical. QSL via his home callsign direct or by the Bureau. 4S, SRI LANKA. Masa, JQ3DUE/4S7DUG, will lead a group of Japanese operators to Sri Lanka between September 18-23rd. Activity will be on 160-6 meters with emphasis on the lower bands. They plan to have four stations active all day long. QSL via operator's instructions. 5U7DX IS NOW QRT. QSL Manager Dennis, PA7FM, informs OPDX that after just 8 days of operations with almost 1000 QSOs made in his spare time, Michael, PA5M, is now in Mali (TZ). He will try to get a licence, although chances look small that he will get one in the short term. On the 16th of September Michael will go to Ghana (9G). A licence there shouldn't be a problem. Graham, 5X1GS, was pretty active over the past weekend on 20/15 meters SSB. Watch around on 14156 kHz after 2000z and 21215 kHz after 1230z. QSL via WB2YQH. 7X2ARA CQWW CW CONTEST STORY. Con, DF4SA, reports, "Since the CQ magazine with the CQWW CW results is out, I have received several E-mails regarding my operation from 7X2ARA in the 2003 CQWW CW Contest. Pierre-Marie, F6FLN/HB9DTM, is in Bujumbura for two months with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). He has gotten his licence (9U6PM) valid through next February. He has a TS450 and will be active on SSB. However, he is waiting for his keyer to be sent to him. His activity over the past week has been on 15/12/10 meters between 0800 and 1530z. Watch around or on 21242, 21270, 24948 and 28505 kHz. 9Y, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO. Bernd "Ben", DL6FBL, will be active as 9Y4ZC during the CQ WW DX CW Contest (November 27-28th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/ High-Power entry. QSL via DL6FBL. A group of French operators from the Clipperton DX Club (CDXC) that include Gerard/F2VX, Jean-Louis/F9DK, Vincent/G0LMX and Alain/F5LMJ will in Thimphu from October 24th to November 11th. During the 1st week from Thimphu they will participate in the CQWW SSB Contest and after that they will move to Jakar for building a new club station. All QSLs are via F9DK and all QSOs will be confirmed via the bureau. A NEW AWARD FROM BARTG! The Britis Amateur Radio Teledata Group (BARTG) is pleased to annouce the last in its series of continental awards. The OCEANIA award completes the continental awards from BARTG. The award is available in three classes: Class 3 is for 10 countries; Class 2 is for 25 countries; and Class 1 is for 45 countries. The claim can be endorsed as ALL RTTY, or ALL PSK, or can be mixed digital modes. You can also claim single band or mixed bands. There are three methods of claiming: 1) Submit the relevant QSL cards. 2) Submit a list of countries worked, endorsed by TWO officials of a recognized club or organisation. 3) For countries worked in one of the BARTG RTTY contests. Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL DXCC Manager, reports that the following operation is approved for DXCC credit: OJ0J - Market Reef July 1-4, 2004 WORD THROUGH THE GRAPE VINE (InterNet Mailing Lists) states the following have and have not been accepted for DXCC: HP1/DJ7AA is NOT BEING ACCEPTED for DXCC by the ARRL due to the lack of documentation. FO/ON4AXU operation IS BEING ACCEPTED for DXCC. FM, MARTINIQUE. Laurent, F5MUX, will return here for the next CQWW SSB Contest (October 30-31st) as a Single-Op/All-Band entry. AS-134. After 4 years of silence, the Hebei/Tianjin Province Group will be activated by Fan Bin, BA1RB, from September 18-20th, as BA1RB/3. Activity will be on 20-10 meters including the WARC bands. Modes will include RTTY and PSK31. Operations will be 40-48 hours depending on the weather and tide conditions. Antennas will be two sets of 2 element yagis (for 20-10 meters. w/WARC bands), a vertical and dipole. BA1RB's planned schedule (may vary due to propagation) is: Local Time Band ------------- ----- Evening, 18th 17m Morning, 19th 12m and 10m Evening, 19th 20m Morning, 20th 15m ADDED NOTE: If possible, they may test 160/80m at sunset. Raman, VU3DJQ, who received permission to operate as AT0RI from Rameswaram on Pamban Island in the Tamil Nadu State South Group (India), has gone QRT earlier than planned on August 28th. QSL via: P.O. Box 6073, Bangalore 560060, India. EU-054. Alberto, IT9MRM, will be active as IF9/IT9MRM from Favignana Island (IIA TP-001, MIA MI-025), September 7th from 0900- 1700z. Activity will be from Punta Sottile Lighthouse (ARLHS ITA-145 and WAIL SI-024) on 40/20 meters SSB. QSL direct or via the bureau. EU-124. Look for the Barry Amateur Radio Society to activate GB5FI from Flatholm Island now through and September 1st. QSL via GW0ANA, direct or by the bureau. EU-136. Operators OE1CIQ, OE8YDQ and OE6CAG will be active from Krk Island (CI-046, MC-185) as 9A/homecall, September 7-11th. If the weather permits, they will also try to activate the following islands: Plavnik Mali Islet (EU-136, CI-225, MC-225), Kormati (EU-136, CI-178, MC-165) and Cres (EU-136, CI-012, MC-056). QSL via operator's instructions. NA-066. Tom, WA6WPG, will be operating from Santa Barbara Island (WLH-0258), September 25-26th. He will be using solar panels and 2 large batteries, and expects to be able to run 100 watts both days on 80-10 meters, CW/SSB. The callsign will be WA6WPG/P. QSL direct or by the Bureau via WA6WPG. ILLW 2004 UPDATE/WRAP. Mike, GM4SUC, Organizer and Coordinator of the 2004 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend, states that there were over 360 stations active in 51 countries from lighthouses and lightships during the event. New countries were SV9, YB, GJ, OA and HB9. Overall most countries had the same number of stations as last year except Wales who went from 1 to 8 stations while the USA went from 72 to 45 stations. Next year's weekend will be from 0001 UTC on Saturday, 20th August until 2359 UTC on Sunday, 21st August 2005. Any comments on the weekend would be appreciated to either Kevin/VK2CE or Mike/GM4SUC. JW, SVALBARD. Operators JW5NM, JW7FD and possibly others will be active as JW5E during the CQ WW DX SSB Contest (October 30-31st) as a Multi-Op/ Single-Transmitter entry. QSL via JW5NM. The QSL route for FP/KT1J has changed effective immediately. K1WY is not the QSL Manager for this station at this time. Send your QSL requests for a contact with FP/KT1J to KT1J for all contacts. QSL direct (w/SASE) or by the Bureau. LX5, LUXEMBOURG. Look for LX5A to be active in two upcoming contests: CQWW RJ RTTY Contest (September 24-25th) - Operators LX1ER and LX1RQ. QSL via the LX Bureau or LX1RQ. ARRL 10m Contest (December 11-12th) - Entry mix mode (Multi/Single). Operators a KT8X (CW); LX1ER and LX1RQ (SSB). QSL via the LX Bureau or LX1RQ. R1, MALYJ VYSOTSKIIJ ISLAND (POSTPONED!). Reports indicate that the R1MVI operation scheduled for August 27-29th, has been postponed due to technical reasons. New dates are expected to be announced later. RARE GRID TO BE ACTIVATED. Just a reminder! Look for Matt/KB8KNM and Dan/KB8UYZ to activate the rare Grid EN67 from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula as K8C on September 5th. For the county hunters, that's Keweenaw County. Activity will be on 80-2 meter SSB for just a one day operation. For more details refer to OPDX.671. QSL direct via Dan, KB8UYZ. All QSLs will be answered. A S.A.S.E. is appreciated, but not required. SOUTH AMERICAN TRIP. Look for Tono, EA9CP, to activate a few South American countries over the next month and a half. His schedule is as follows: Peru - Active from Punta Hermosa from September 9-15th. His callsign will be OA4/EA9CP. Ecuador - Active from Quito from September 19-21st and October 3rd. He will be active as HC1/EA9CP or HC1CB. Ecuador - Active from Isla San Cristobal (IOTA SA-004) from September 22nd to October 2nd. Costa Rica - Active from San Jose from October 4-11th. His callsign will be TI1/EA9CP. Colombia - Active from Isla San Andres (IOTA NA-033) from October 11-13th. His callsign will be HK0/EA9CP. SPECIAL EVENT. Operators Jerome/F5ASD and Gerald/F4ASA will be active using the special callsign TM5BDM to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the First Battle of the River Marne (1914-2004) during the WWI, September 4-5th. Their QTH will be 40 km east of Paris Villeroy (Dpt 77), Charles Peguy Memorial. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using a TS-140 and FT-100 into a G5RV. QSL Manager is F5ASD; QSL direct or via the Bureau. TA, TURKEY (IOTA Ops). Operators Thierry/F5SNY and Christian/F8BOD are in Turquie up to September 10th, and will be active as TA/homecall. They will try to activate some of Turkey's islands such as AS-115, AS-123 and AS-098 for the IOTA program. TK, CORSICA. Christophe, F4DZY, will be active from here as TK/F4DZY from September 8-22nd. Activity will be on the HF bands on SSB. QSL via operator's instructions. TX/C, CHESTERFIELD ISLAND (Update). The German group who plans to go here in October will be active on 160-6 meters CW/SSB/RTTY. Their callsign will not be announced before their operation. Operators will be Chris/DL5NAM, Jan/DJ8NK, Hawa/DK9KX, Dieter/DJ9ON, Dieter/DL3KDV and Heye/DJ9RR. Activity will begin on October 15th or 16th, and last for 8 days. ALL QSOs are OK via the ARRL/LoTW. VP8, FALKLAND ISLANDS. The Group Tomball DX'ers (GTDX) has announced their second annual DXpedition. This year the group consisting of Cal White/WF5W, Keith Dutson/NM5G, Madison Jones/W5MJ and Paul Frantz/W5PF, will visit the Falkland Islands. They will arrive on Saturday, November 20th, and leave on Saturday, December 4th. Activity will include an entry in the CQWW DX Contest as VP8WWW. During the rest of their stay the group will be active on all bands from 80-10 meters with the possibility of 6 meters depending on conditions. The WARC bands will be emphasized, and there will be activity on RTTY and PSK. Individual callsigns will be issued upon arrival in Stanley. QSL all callsigns via W5PF. The group will have two Kenwood TS-480HX tranceivers. Amplifiers are not permitted, so this will be a low power operation. Oms, PY5EG, has informed the contesting community that the next World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC in July 2006) will be in Florianopolis, and the WRTC2006 Committee has started the activities to organize the event. The initial Committee has been formed and include the following: PP5JR/Sergio, PP5WG/Walter, PP5UA/Pedro, PT2ADM/Gustavo, PY0FF/Andre, PY1KN/Marcelo, PY2EMC/Eric, PY2YP/Cesar, PY5CC/Peter, PY5KD/ Luciano and PY5EG/Oms. More individuals will be added to the Committee later.
