Default FT-100D question: Is ALC a good indication of modulation?

Hello all. I haven't been using my current FT-100D for very long so I am unsure
of how good it sounds on SSB. I have selected the "ALC" display, which, from
what I understand, is supposed to indicate modulation. The books says to adjust
the mic gain so that 3 or 4 bars are indicated in ALC when talking normally. I
can't seem to get 3 or 4 bars when talking normally. On SSB I can see the RF
output bar moving and peaking at times. I have the mic gain set at 40 with a
Heil HM-10 boom mic. Can anyone offer suggestions for adjusting my audio?
