Default Radio installation 2001 Expedition

Hi I have just recently bought a 2001 Ford Expedition. This model has
"bucket seats" and a center console/armrest containing the CD changer.
There is literally no room to install a radio in the console, and I want
the storage section to keep as is for storage. What I am looking to do
is mount the radios (one or two dash mount radios, Motorola Spectra or
similar) on an aluminum plate just inside the passenger side of the
console unit, near the dash. I figure that putting the radios there will
be below the passenger airbag area and will not intrude (too much) into
the passenger seat area. I want this arrangement to be extremely
mechanically secure and not have to modify the center console in any
major (unrepairable) way.

Has anyone done this? I have a plan in my head how to do this, but hate
to re-invent the wheel. Are there any commercial mounts like this (Yes I
have checked Tessco and Galls).
