express an opinion instead of help. I do believe I wouldn't trade a

I have been using the Apex site for repair for some time- as often as not,
they send me a new iron for free the next day. Great service. I bought the
Hakko on the recommendation from a friend. I won't buy another- it doesn't
even have an LED to tell you if it's on or not- had to add that myself.

soldering equipment. I've seen only one that we "had to bury". OTOH, I've
seen many other highly-touted brands that were less than impressive. I'll
keep Apex in mind though, with Weller's track record, I doubt I'll need
their service.
I recently bought a WES51 pencil that I like a lot and my current employer
just bought a D650 gun that has power to spare for those big jobs. The
first Weller product I used? Dad's 8100 Junior that finally gave up after
"only" 40 years!

Another data point ... I got my Weller D8100 for Christmas when I was 16.
I used it for 20 years in the US Navy. I still use it at home. I'm now
70. The 8100 is what I grab to solder on UHF connectors and in tube
circuits. On the bench is an old used Weller WTCP Station bought at a
Swap Meet. Not that I wouldn't like a newer Temp Contolled Station, but I
still get along hobby-wise with what I have.

equipment. However, we do use their equipment... and it has proven to
be much more reliable than Weller stuff. I guess you get what you pay
for. Not surprising I guess.

I was commenting on your speech compressor not the equipment you use to
build it.

If you had read the other posts, some denegrating the Weller company, you
would have read a comment of mine that explains my use of Weller products
for over 60 years. That includes personal use of several models of their
irons as well as the industrial use of Weller irons and guns by my employees
in a manufacturing environment. I HAVE used a few other irons, a favorite
being the Antex for SMD work. I suspect that, unless you're morbidly obese,
I have likely melted more solder pounds than you weigh and am particularly
offended, by people offering their unsolicited opinions on subjects they
know little about. Go build a compressor. Most of us these days, do it in
software with DSP.

Looking at some of your solder joints it shows you don't use a Weller,
perhaps you should?
