While trying to install RT Systems "DJ-V5T Programmer" on my new
floppyless laptop, I received the following error: "The was a problem detected with the disk. Error: 1023". (Yes, the "The" typo is in the software.) Among various unsuccessful attempts, I tried installing over the network with the original floppy in a networked computer and locally from the hard drive of the target laptop, including one attempt to install from the root directory of C:. cloningsoftware.com's response to this problem was: "Given that your machine does not have a floppy drive, I would recommend that you get that programmer on CD as it is now offered. We offer that upgrade in media at half price to those with the programmer. Send your original diskette with $10.00 to the address in the signature along with your return mailing information for the upgrade." Not happy with paying for software multiple times, I arrived at the following solution. The key is to transfer the floppy boot sector to a media format (e.g., Compact Flash, SD Card, USB memory 'key') that the laptop can read. In my case, I had an old 8MB Compact Flash card collecting dust. You'll want to use media that you can keep in case a re-install is necessary. SOLUTION: On a PC with both a floppy drive and a interface for your chosen media, use WinImage 6.1 (free 30-day trial) to extract setup.exe and the boot sector image from the floppy and save to a temporary file Use Windows Explorer to change the volume label on an empty Compact Flash card to match the floppy (not sure if this step is necessary) Use WinImage 6.1 to write to write the boot sector binary and setup.exe to the Compact Flash card. (This took me a few attempts due to learning the WinImage software.) Stick the Compact Flash Card into PC Card adapter and insert into laptop. Run setup.exe. Installs fine. |
