I have a Kenwood TS-711A. I bought the SS-64 tone encoder from
Communications Specialists at http://www.com-spec.com/ss64.htm They don't have installation instructions for the TS-711A. I have 3 wires to hookup: Red: v+ Black: Ground Yellow: Modulator The first two I can handle but the yellow I need help with... I just received the service manual and schematics today but I still can't find the modulator. Does anyone know where to solder the yellow wire for tone out? Thanks, Doug N8DRD -- OldTimerNews http://www.oldtimernews.com |

Thanks, Doug N8DRD Doug - You can call ComSpec Tech support. They have hundreds of Application Notes on file on file. They are slowly moving these paper documents to the Internet web site. SS-64 General Product Installation Sheet http://www.com-spec.com/insheet/ss64inst.pdf The second page of the SS-64 highlights the CTCSS OUTPUT (YELLOW) (PIN 3) This output generates the CTCSS encode tone. The most common place to connect this line is just prior to the modulation stage in the transmitter. Typical connections would be to the center of the deviation pot. to the varactor diode in the modulator circuit, or to the manufacturer’s suggested connection point. This connection point can vary from radio to radio. [A schematic of the radio is useful] Do NOT connect the CTCSS Output to the microphone input as the microphone audio stages will distort and attenuate the CTCSS signal. Since the CTCSS Output on the SS-6.4 is tow impedance, you may have to install a series resistor to reduce the loading effects of the CTCSS Output depending on the interface impedance. This is evident in the case of connecting to the center of a 106K deviation pot. In this case, a 106K series resistor will compensate for the impedance difference. In addition, a slight adjustment of the voice deviation may be required to compensate for the CTCSS Output circuit loading. Doug
Send that back to Com-spec and get the TU-5PX that's made for the 711/811 $60.00 and it's a simple plug-in http://www.piexx.com/cgi-bin/piexx.c...=3262023.14035 Harry N8GNI Doug Davis wrote: I have a Kenwood TS-711A. Doug,
Of course, NOW somebody comes up with a link for you for a tone board made specifically for your rig. If you don't want to send back the Spec Com board, I think I know an easy way for you to find the modulation point...looking at the board that is a direct replacement for that rig, it appears the tone board plugs onto 7 or 8 pins that must be present in the radio. One of those MUST be the audio input to the modulator. Check the service manual to find the pinout for that connector and you should be home free...
