It is definitely a transceiver on the aircraft band. I fly and carry it as
a backup in the plane. Also has a backup VOR (navigation) capability as well as FM radio. Nice piece of gear for a pilot. Plus, as was mentioned earlier, it has 2m capabilities. Pretty cool. It's not aircraft equipment, it's a single-band ham transceiver that can receive aircraft. There are cheaper multi-band ham transceivers that have wider receivers than that. My VX-5, for example, can receive aircraft - AND any frequency from 0.5 MHz to 999 MHz, AM, FM or WFM, and can transmit on 6, 2 and 440. And it's cheaper. From what I see on their web page, it appears that the VXA-700 is an airband transceiver (not just a receiver), with 2-meter amateur operation added. It does look as if it re-uses a lot of the VX-7 construction. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |

That was the mission I was thinking of. I used to fly a fair amount of
single engine, single pilot night IFR. My only remedy for a total elecrical system failure was to always know which way to go to find clear weather... This device would avoid an emergency operation. de W8CCW On Mon, 19 Sep 2005 08:33:05 -0400, "Win Heagy" wrote: It is definitely a transceiver on the aircraft band. Is there anywhere I can see more detail of the VOR capabilities? I looked over the web site but it doesn't really show what it can do in that function. Dan |

I notice that on the referenced website it shows the radio to be
discontinued and no longer in stock. Apparently, there will be a replacement. Here is a site where you read some reviews on it. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3...de94e000253471 You can read all about it here. Get manual, brochure, etc. http://www.vertexstandard.com/indexV...8&DivisionID=2 Dick On Mon, 19 Sep 2005 19:58:10 -0500, "Daniel C Mckenzie" wrote: "Win Heagy" wrote in message ... Hmmm...good question. Don't know if there is a web site where you can go
look. The manual has details on how to use the VOR capabilities. Essentially, you can select any VOR frequency (I think ILS too) and get course/bearing info, as well as a CDI indication if desired. The range of the VOR capability is very limited. I would not expect to do any real world navigation with it, but as a backup, it could be indispensable (if everything else crapped out). The VOR was an added bonus for me as I use a yoke mounted GPS (in addition to the VOR receivers in the plane and a Loran). So I really bought it for the backup voice capabilities. Also nice for getting ATIS/AWOS, clearances, FBOs, etc., while sitting on the ground. Win "Daniel C Mckenzie" wrote in message ... "Win Heagy" wrote in message ...
