I'm looking for a phone patch unit that I can send to my friend in a
distant location where I used to live, so that he can patch me into
local 2 meter repeaters.

I've never seen a phone patch unit, so I don't know how they work. He
has a Yaesu 736 (2m/440Mhz) rig.

I would appreciate some help on what kind of unit I need to look for
to fit his rig, and how it operates!

Look up IRLP or EchoLink.

What you describe is actually a 'reverse' phone patch (phone line
to radio) as opposed to the more 'normal' kind.

It is doable, but you would have to have some way to either
manipulate push-to-talk on his end remotely, or have him do it for you.
Clumsy at best either way, and you rack up long-distance charges.

You may want to look into Echolink. It lets you establish a
realtime link, via Internet pathways, between two repeaters. The only
criterion is that the two repeaters both have an Echolink connection.

If both you and your friend are within range of an Echolink-
equipped repeater, no rig mods are necessary: One of you simply sets up
the link, usually via DTMF commands to the repeater, and you're off and
running.

Check out Mountain Radio. They sell the rig blaster interface unit that is
good for communicating between computers, rigs and telephone lines. Watch
out, their construction techniques are very half assed with solder splashes
etc on the printed circuit cards and shipped units that do not work.
