Good afternoon you all, I just got an early Christmas president. My
friend dropped off a Radio Shack Pro 2011 scanner a couple of weeks ago for me to take a look at and now he says for me to just keep it. The problem seems to be in the liitle uP board. It will work a while and then just go crazy. I thought maybe it was a power supply problem but even running it from a battery doesnt help. Ive tried replacing caps on the uP board with no help. I had really given up on it but I would like to try one other thing now that its mine. IF I could bet a schematic on the thing I would like to see if I could control the radio from a PC port. I have done this before by bit banging data into the PLL circuit. If you have a schematic you could email me I would be thankful. |

I thought the big glob of epoxy on it was encapsulating a uP. Apparently its just a keyboard matrix with the decoding done on the main board. I found some really bad cold soder joints that connected the keypad to the main board. When I pulled the wires loose they had no solder on them at all. Called my friend and told him to come get it and he still said it was mine. I would still like a schematic or sevice manual for it. Does anyone know how old it is. Also I think GRE made the radio and also sold the radio under their name. Does anyone know which model that was. Jimmie |

Service manuals are hard to come by anymore but I'll bet this guy can
fix you right up! http://www.qsl.net/ka2pyj/pro2011.htm I have a pro 2096 I bought off ebay for $50.00 as a tech special guaranteed to be DOA I shiped it to rat shack and they returned it saying parts no longer available now I'm at $84.00 and counting! I found on fixya, a problem with the ribbon connections but the tech said the 103 pin chip was shorted!! I refuse to believe that as it was one of the first batch that could be modified to no gap status!! ! Now what shall I do?? |

Maybe some other guys here will encourage you with suggestions. My suggestion is, unless there are some very unique technical specifications that you really need, to cut your losses up to this point and buy something that you have a high probability expectation will work, out of the box, and has some warranty protection (which usually means they may just give you a new device instead of fixing the old one). I know someone who is working on a dead ham transceiver, all solid state and major ricebox brand, who has already spent enormous numbers of hours with little progress and with the full knowledge that most of the chips and sub-assemblies are no longer available or supported by the company. We have been in this "new" throw-away economy evern since chips started coming out where the technology understandably must progress in a manner that automatically makes obsolete the prior generation of technology for the purpose of causing ownership of capabilities to be more expensive than if the older technology were made repairable. |

Throw aways:
Actually I saw that coming about 20 years ago with the works in a drawer by magnovox. I ordered a surface mount hearing kit from Ramsey!! Had to use a toothpic and super glue the components into place before I could solder them! Back then the flex monuted magnifier was saficient, now ,it requires a jewlers loop to see them!!.. However GRE should have offered to fix mine as it was the GRE 400/500 .They never answered my email?? Oh well I'll catch someone who wants to tinker or find a junk one in a pawn shop?? |

Well, there has been a lot of useful technical progress but I am a little bit bothered by this trend to _also_ (besides not being able to fix anything because it is 'throw away") the trend to make stuff so that it actually has to be fixed by bringing the unit in for some kind of aftermarket repair, adjustment, etc., and it costs some money in addition to the inconvienience. Cell phone viruses, for example, are known and the stories say they are already out there (one will drain your battery on you), and, so as we get more web access via PDA-type devices, what do you do if your thing starts acting up? Go to a URL and download a "fix" and if the virus fixes it so you can 't do that, then you have to send in your whole thing with $100 or so to have _them_ fix it? This is about what it's going to start taking soon. |

That account no longer exist. Most of the frequency blocking is done iin the uP board. If this can be bypassed using a PC interface you are in business. Interfaces to replace the uP board have been built around a PIC but I have almost zero experience with a PIC. Jimmie |

Hey Jimmie! My Panasonic inverter microwave croaked. I got
a chance to replace the power supply! The transformer looks just like a fancy TV flyback, and the entire board weighs about 8 ounces. The supplies are about 50 bucks new. Panasonic vented the ovens through the top, and the moist air flows around the electronics on the side, causing many early failure modes. Figured you'd be interested. Pete |

Pete Thanks Pete, I order one a couple of months ago to play with and found another at the thrift store the other day. I havent had much of a chance lately. I worked on main frame computer systems for over 20 years and now they put in a new system that is all PCs. You just replace the box when it breaks. I have been going to school on that so much lately I havent gotten back to my project. I do think that there is a place for HVSPs in amateur radio, maybe not microwave oven inverters but someone is going to come up with a good pwer supply at a reasonable price. I invision a device that would mount in place of an existing transformer and maybe sell for half the price of the replacement transformer. Lately my thoughts have gone more towards ways of modifying UPSs. The UPSs operate in a PWM switch mode to convert high frequency chopped signal to 60hz. I figure if you could modify the PWM data that is being used you could drive a step up transformer for HV. One problem I have is finding data on how these operate. It seems no one publishes a schematic. Jimmie |
