Only CW or narrow bandwidth data transmission less than 100Hz may be used in the new band. A new RSGB Deputy Regional Manager is being sought for the York area of Region 4. If you are interested in volunteering for this important role within the local amateur community, please contact Harold Scrivens, the Region 4 Regional Manager, by e-mail to . Plans for the lecture streams at the forthcoming RSGB Convention on 9 to 11 October are well under way. Some of the highlights will be lectures on the KP5 Desecheo Expedition by Bob Allphin, K4UEE, the International Beacon Project by Leslie Butterfield, G0CIB and a talk on ATUs by Peter Chadwick, G3RZP. CRFS equipped a fleet of commercial vehicles, which travelled around all parts of the United Kingdom to monitor and record details of spectrum usage from10MHz to 5GHz. Data was collected and collated over a five-month period. The data amounted to 4.2 million individual spectrum measurements, which were gathered in a database. The report titled Capture of Spectrum Utilisation Information Using Moving Vehicles is now available on the Ofcom website at www.ofcom.org.uk/research/technology/research. And now the solar factual data for the period from the 4th to the 10th of May, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on 11th of May. On the 8th of May an international panel of experts led by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Centre said that an unusually long, deep lull in sunspots led the panel to revise its 2007 prediction that the next cycle of solar storms would start in March 2008 and peak in late 2011 or mid-2012. The persistence of a quiet sun since the last prediction has led the panel to a consensus that the next cycle will be "moderately weak." The panel predicts the upcoming solar cycle 24 will peak in May 2013 with a daily sunspot number of around 90. If the prediction proves true, solar cycle 24 will be the weakest cycle since sunspot cycle number 16, which peaked at 78 daily sunspots in 1928, and the ninth weakest since the 1750s, when numbered cycles began. The strongest solar storm on record occurred in 1859 during another below-average cycle, similar to the one we are predicting. The 1859 storm shorted out telegraph wires, causing fires in North America and Europe, sent readings of the Earth's magnetic field soaring, and produced northern lights so bright that people could read newspapers by their light. 5 Now to the present, during the 5th and the 6th a coronal mass ejection took place from an active region from just behind the east limb of the Sun. However, on the 9th it rotated into view as a spotless region. Several small sub-flares took place reaching the B1 level from the 8th to the 10th. Solar activity was very low and the solar disc remained spotless everyday. Solar flux levels increased from 68 units to 72 by the 9th and the 10th. This is the highest daily figure since the 17th of January. The average was 70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 10th was also 70 units. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level everyday. Geomagnetic activity started at quiet levels with an Ap index of 2 units on the 5th. As forecast, a coronal hole disturbance arrived on the 7th and last for most of the 8th. The Ap index on the 7th and the 8th was 10 and 13 units respectively. The average was Ap 6 units. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 320 kilometres per second on the 5th to 520 by the 8th. Particle densities were low throughout. Bz varied between minus and plus 2 nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus and plus 6 nanoTeslas on the most disturbed day. And finally the solar forecast. For the first time in a long time there is a moderate chance that sunspots could be visible this week. Saying that, solar activity should stay at very low levels. Solar flux levels are expected to be around the 70 mark are slightly higher. Geomagnetic activity should be mostly quiet. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be about 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be around 10MHz. Paths this week to Japan should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 19MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 15MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0800 and 1400 hours UTC. Sporadic-E is expected to take place on some days at HF and the lower VHF bands. Next week the latest monthly smoothed sunspot numbers and news on the latest orbiting solar telescope. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 6 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known.
