GB2RS NEWS Sunday 28th June 2009 The news headlines * Get set for VHF National Field Day * Amateur gear may need to meet emissions standards * VKs now on 136KHz Next weekend, 4 and 5 July is the RSGB VHF National Field Day. Clubs and contest groups from the UK and all across Europe will be active, trying to make as many contacts as possible on the VHF bands between 50MHz and 1.3GHz. There's a variety of sections for you to take part in, depending on the gear and manpower that you have available to you. This year, though, there's a new section to the contest: the Fixed Station Sweepers Section. This seems like a really excellent and fun section for stations who are at home during the contest. What you have to do is to contact as many of the list of registered NFD stations as you can. The list of the stations can be downloaded from the VHFCC website. If you're not going out and about during the VHF NFD weekend, why not get on, print yourself off a checklist and see how many of the stations you can work. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is moving towards requiring commercially produced, finished amateur radio equipment to conform to international standards for emissions. We understand that the proposals will not affect kits or homebrew. More details will be published in RadCom as they are known. The Australian Communications and Media Authority has advised the RSGBs sister organisation the Wireless Institute of Australia that any VK amateur holding an Advanced license may now apply for a variation of their licence to allow operation on a secondary basis in the low frequency band from 135.7 to 137.8kHz. Australian hams are limited to a maximum radiated power of 1 watt ERP in the new band. Contest University, to be held at the RSGB Convention in October, is a platform for sharing ideas and learning new ways to enjoy amateur radio contesting. It is a means of giving something back to amateur radio and helping others on their way with their hobby. In addition to the talks already mentioned in the July RadCom, John Warburton, G4IRN has confirmed for the DXpedition Contesting Multi-Session. The IARU Region 1 reports that the North Korean embassy in Tripoli is again using 14.328430MHz for traffic with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pyongyang. You may hear an ARQ burst system "DPRK-FSK600" at 600 Baud, 600Hz shift, operating on two different frequencies at about 1630UTC daily. One frequency is in the amateur radio band, the other one out of it. Slightly better news now as the Codar HF Radar from Naples on the 24MHz band disappeared after a complaint from IK8OZZ. A few days later another Codar system was found on 24.850 to 24.950kHz. Bearings taken by the German PTT indicated the source was on Pag Island, Croatia. The German PTT filed an official complaint to the Croatian PTT. 2 Plans for the National Hamfest in October are going well. The RSGB is pleased to announce that there will be a free raffle for those attending on either the 2nd or 3rd October. The first trader to donate a prize is Martin Lynch & Sons who have given the Beam in a Bag recently reviewed in RadCom by Peter Dodd. Many more valuable prizes are expected. In addition to those traders already mentioned in the July RadCom, the RSGB are pleased to announce that bhi and Sandpiper have both signed up to attend the event. An RSGB Region 4 Train The Trainers session on 1 August is being hosted by the Great Lumley Amateur Radio and Electronics Society at Great Lumley Community Centre, Front Street, Great Lumley, near Chester le Street, County Durham DH3 4JD. It is due to start at 10am and finish at around 5pm. This venue is the home of Great Lumley Amateur Radio and Electronics Society. The session will be lead by Dave Wilson. Those wishing to attend please contact Ray, G3ZRK via e-mail to . Please note closing date for candidates wishing to attend is 12 July. At the RSGB Convention in October, Jim Bacon, G3YLA will present a talk entitled: 'Always take the weather with you'. Jim will be known to many as one of the team of BBC weather men. He will present an update to his series of articles on Sporadic-E published in RadCom some years ago. He will discuss some weather science and will explain how the collection of myths and facts have been applied already to this year's Sporadic-E openings, with some startling results. Observations will continue throughout the year and it may be that he will be able to show that understanding Sporadic-E may not be so difficult to explain, but may still be difficult to forecast. He hopes that the talk will enable amateurs to use weather data to test the possible Sporadic-E links next season. Initial results also seem to show that the same explanation works for the USA as well. Bookings for the Convention on the 9th to 11th October can be made online at www.rsgbevents.org. The Medway Raynet Group, which includes the Isle of Sheppey on its patch, has been granted the callsign GB100SS for use on the 25th and 26th July from the site of the disused airfield at Eastchurch in Kent - an event called 'Sky Sheppey 2009'. Eastchurch was the founding airfield of the Royal Naval Air Service. Now the site of a prison, the actual airfield cannot be used, the centenary commemoration necessarily being earthbound. Medway Raynet will be using HF and VHF bands, and all logged contacts will receive a special QSL card If your radio club can access the internet on club night, why not watch a video from the online archive on the BATC streamer? Not only are there numerous talks, including historical material, but you can even watch the current week's GB2RS News broadcast courtesy of newsreader Roy, G8CKN. Just point your browser at www.batc.tv, click on Film Archive and then choose a video from the drop*down list. The GB2RS broadcast can also be watched live via the Live Events channel at 0930 on Sunday morning. And now the details of rallies and events for the coming week. So, look out for GB7HQ during the contest and work them on as many bands and modes as you can. 5 And now the solar factual data for the period from the 15th to the 21st of June, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 22nd of June. Last week brought news of a paper by a pair of American solar physicists, suggesting that the current scarcity of sunspots is due to a jet stream deep inside the Sun that has been migrating much slower than usual through the Sun's interior. Sunspots apparently do not begin to reappear until the jet stream reaches a certain critical latitude. They suggest that it is now, at last, approaching that latitude. As usual, though, we have no alternative but to wait and see whether they are correct. Two sunspot groups appeared during the period, the first on the 17th which disappeared the same day and the second on the last day. Both were very small and inactive, however, they belonged to the new sunspot cycle. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels averaged 67 units with very little daily variation. The 90 day solar flux average on the 21st was unchanged at 70 units. X-ray flux units remained below the minimum reporting level. Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday and averaged Ap 4 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 270 kilometres per second on the 17th to 370 by the 21st. Particle densities were low except for a brief increase to 32 particles per cubic centimetre early on the 21st. The interplanetary magnetic field varied no more than minus 5 and plus 7 nanoTeslas for the period. And finally the solar forecast. This week the solar disc could be spotless on some days. Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. Solar flux levels should be around the 70 mark for most of the week. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be mostly quiet. However, a small disturbance could take place around midweek from a small coronal hole. This coronal hole as been present for at least the last two years and every 27 or 28 days caused a magnetic disturbance on almost every rotation. At its largest the hole would cause a disturbance lasting 4 days and an Ap index into the 30's, like it did on 23rd of April 2008 with an Ap of 32 units. A sign that we might be at the end of the solar minimum is that all the coronal holes have now almost disappeared, except for the ones that are always present near both the solar polar regions. Coronal holes are more prevalent during the declining phase of the sunspot cycle. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about 11MHz. Paths this week to South Africa should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 25MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 20MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0600 and 1600 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take place on some days with the possibility of openings up to 144MHz and multi-hop openings in various directions. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 6 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known.
