/////////////////////////////////////////// School Children get to Chat with ISS Astronaut: Posted: 01 Apr 2016 05:31 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36497 Thanks to Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program offered at the National Soaring Museum in Big Flats, 10 area elementary school students had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity Friday to speak with someone stationed in space. Using amateur radio, Elmira, Elmira Heights and Horseheads school district students -- Aidyn Bahantka, Ella Brady, Alanna Davis, Ashley French, Samir and Kiran Gulati, Ashwin Senawiratne, Alexander Shultz, Evan Smith and Michael Chao -- were able to complete a 15-minute Q and A with British astronaut Timothy Peake, who is on board the International Space Station, or ISS. He and a couple of other astronauts are traveling on the ISS as part of the European Space Agency's six-month Principia mission. Questions from the students included: What is a day living in space like? How long does it take to become an astronaut? How fast does the space station travel, and can you feel it? Have you seen alien lifeforms? Through the static of the connection, Peake replied that living in space is an amazing experience. He said that each day working in space is busy and full of adventure. /////////////////////////////////////////// Woman Discovers Grandfather's Post (QSL) Card on eBay: Posted: 01 Apr 2016 05:31 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36496 T'S amazing what you can find on eBay - like a post card sent from Barnsley to America by your grandfather in 1939. That's what happened to Jane Walton when she was reminiscing about her grandfather's passion for amateur radio. Clifton Trevor Malkin was a keen amateur radio ham throughout his life. At precisely 10.45am on July 26, 1939, he went to Wombwell Post Office and posted to America a card documenting a radio communication he had made. /////////////////////////////////////////// Secret Morse Code Hidden in the Classic 'Mission Impossible' Theme: Posted: 01 Apr 2016 05:29 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36495 Mission Impossible is one of the most successful serials of all time, creating many spy genre tropes and inspiring five motion pictures. And the iconic title sequence may well be the most memorable of all time. A mysterious hand lights up a match, which sets a fuse on fire. As the fuse burns across the screen we see short clips and teasers of the episode that's about to unravel. In 'Mission Impossible', he used jazz as the main inspiration and incorporated an unusual 5/4 timing that gave the theme its unmistakable urgency. In MI the music was a character itself, featuring prominently throughout every episode. What you might not know is that the famous main theme has a hidden message. When you tap the beat it actually spells out the letters M.I. in Morse code.
