These federally licensed radio operators will make contacts worldwide from temporary amateur radio stations near the bridge. Award certificates -- issued by the national organization for ham radio, the American Radio Relay League -- will be given to hams who verify contacts with the stations. The event is part of the ARRL-sponsored National Parks on the Air. The bridge is part of the National Parks Service New River Gorge National River Area. The public will be able to visit one of the ham stations and see it in action. "West Virginia ham radio operators are excited to help promote the National Park Service Centennial," said event organizer Randy Damron. "NPS is one of our country's greatest treasures ... and the New River Gorge Bridge is certainly one of West Virginia's greatest treasures.
