/////////////////////////////////////////// Ham Radio Clubs Put Equipment to the Test on Field Day: Posted: 31 May 2016 05:20 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36866 To most of us, it seems we live in a world of instant, uninterrupted communications. Friends and family, even complete strangers, are only a post, tweet, email, phone call or text away. But amateur radio operators see that the complex communications systems we've come to rely on are dependent on the functioning of commercial power, Internet providers and IT specialists. Amateur radio operators, also known as hams, create their own communications. They operate on specially designated frequencies and can communicate to the world, and each other, when all other systems fail. "We use two-way radio and actually transmit a signal through the atmosphere to make communications," said John Guthans, of Slidell. And if their equipment breaks down, they can usually fix it or find another way to work in the field. Guthans is a member of the Ozone Amateur Radio Club based in Slidell and a Federal Communications Commission licensed operator. He's one of more than 170,000 members of the American Radio Relay League. Each year, the league sponsors Field Day as a fun way members can test their skills and emergency preparedness. During Field Day, on June 25, ham operators throughout the United States and Canada attempt to make as many contacts as possible in a 24-hour period. /////////////////////////////////////////// Ship-to-Ship Radio Event on Battleship: Posted: 31 May 2016 05:20 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36865 CAMDEN - The Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station will host a talk with some of the other 100 museum ships around the world at the ship's annual radio event Saturday and Sunday.
