As people along the coast board up their windows and put hurricane plans
into action, others are making sure there is a constant line of
communication. Sometimes, ham radios are all we have. A ham radio is a
radio used when power and service for everything else goes out. And when
trouble hits, like Hurricane Matthew, volunteers are keeping watch and
passing along important. Amateur radio operators are so important because
people want to know what's going on and if their loved ones are safe.

BOZEMAN -- This evening, I went to the Gallatin Ham Radio Club to see if
they had any contact with Florida. The people I spoke with at this club
hadn't, but they took me into the ham radio area and showed me that it is
possible to do if Florida needed Montana's help. "We're all listening to
health and welfare traffic net on the HF frequencies. Those would be the
lower frequencies that are commonly used for traffic and communications
within the United States, and there is currently a number of stations on
and around the United States handling traffic that would be communications
request in Florida," says Todd Gahagan a 40 year member of the Gallatin Ham
Radio Club.

Planets' Alignment May Successfully Explain Sun's Peculiar Cycle:

A variety of Earth's phenomena are influenced by the Sun's magnetic field
but there is no surety about the working process of Sun's cycle. A new
theoretical study has proposed that the behavior of Sun's magnetic field
and its cycle may be closely link to the planets' alignment.

Interim Section Manager Appointed in Eastern Pennsylvania:

Bob Wiseman, WB3W, of Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, has been
appointed as the Interim Section Manager for the ARRL Eastern
Pennsylvania Section. He is fulfilling the current term of office
that was declared vacant by the ARRL Executive Committee of the ARRL
Board of Directors this past June. Wiseman's interim appointment
continues through March 31, 2018.

KB1UN), of Newington, Connecticut, died on October 6. He was 64.

Over the past week (September 29 through October 5), relative to the
previous seven days the average daily sunspot number declined 9
points to 20.7, and average daily solar flux increased from 81.4 to
86.7. Average daily planetary A index increased from 19.7 to 21.4,
and average mid-latitude A index (measured in Virginia) increased
from 12.3 to 15.1.
