/////////////////////////////////////////// Palm Beach Students Talk to Astronaut on Space Station: Posted: 17 Oct 2016 05:03 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37788 Some Palm Beach County students got an out-of-the-world experience Monday, chatting live with an astronaut on the International Space Station. The students at Howell L. Watkins Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens spent about 10 minutes using a ham radio to ask Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi what it's like to live in low Earth orbit and what inspired him to go into space. "I was inspired at 19 years old when I watched the movie Apollo 13," said Onishi, who is now 40 and works for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. "I was really impressed that astronauts go into space carrying other people's hopes and dreams." Watkins is one of 17 schools nationwide selected by Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, a group that helps provide groups across the United States with opportunities to talk to astronauts. /////////////////////////////////////////// Conneaut ARC Draws Electronic Vendors and Radio Hams from All Over: Posted: 17 Oct 2016 05:02 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37787 CONNEAUT -- The annual Conneaut Amateur Radio Club Hamfest continues to draw electronics vendors and radio hams from all over -- from the west side of Cleveland to Buffalo and beyond. This year's Hamfest was held at the Conneaut chapter of the American Legion on Sunday morning. Mike Anderson, secretary of the Conneaut Amateur Radio Club, said this was the third year in a row the club has hosted the event at the American Legion, "We're one of the oldest ham radio clubs in the area," he said. "We go back to 1947." He said the club used to have Hamfests over 10 years ago, but stopped having them until three years ago because there was little interest then. "The ham radio climate wasn't conducive to having events like this until a few years ago," he said. "Now it seems to be coming back and people are interested again." He said the club's membership is mostly from eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, although fans of amateur radio and vendors come from all over to attend the event. /////////////////////////////////////////// Hamfest Took Over the Airwaves at Kalamazoo Expo Center: Posted: 17 Oct 2016 05:01 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37786 KALAMAZOO, Mich.
