/////////////////////////////////////////// We Can Now Watch Solar Storms in Real Time, and it's Going to Be Epic: Posted: 14 Jan 2017 04:14 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38423 Scientists have now got access to the most detailed real-time images of the Sun ever, thanks to a new upgrade to the world's highest-resolution solar telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) in California. The new capabilities mean it'll be easier for researchers to study a wider view of solar activity as it's actually happening -- something that's crucial for our understanding of powerful events like solar storms, which can have a devastating effect on our satellite and communications technology. "To understand the fundamental dynamics of the Sun, such as the origin of solar storms, we need to collect data from as wide a field of view as possible," says physicist Philip Goode from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. To capture a broader perspective on this kind of solar activity, Goode's team -- including researchers at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics in Germany -- worked for more than a decade on what's called multi-conjugate adaptive optics, or MCAO. /////////////////////////////////////////// Radio Group Try Out Experiments with Equipment: Posted: 14 Jan 2017 04:13 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38422 MEMBERS of the Thurrock Acorns Amateur Radio Club (TAARC) met at the 1st Grays Scout HQ to explore how to run a hunt. The goal of the event is to discover a radio station that is hidden somewhere in Thurrock, the Fox, using direction finding equipment. The skills required include an ability to build a directional antenna and be able to connect the antenna to a receiver. /////////////////////////////////////////// Army Veteran Stranded on Beach with Broken Leg is Saved after Morse Code: Posted: 14 Jan 2017 04:13 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38421 An army veteran who was stranded on a dark beach with a badly broken leg and no mobile phone managed to use a pocket torch to signal for help. Tim Robinson, who had slipped on seaweed during a stroll, crawled for two hours toward the car park wife Paula was waiting at. And while still more than a mile away, the 54-year-old used his pocket torch to flash an SOS in Morse code. After getting no answer, he crawled another 50 yards and tried again. He was relieved when, after his third signal, a reply blinked back in the distance. /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateurlogic Episode 100 is Released: Posted: 14 Jan 2017 04:15 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38420 It's the 100th episode of AmateurLogic.TV.
