If you understand the material, the specifics of the question pool are immaterial. Having taken all three written elements just a month ago, I have to disagree slightly. The amateur extra element (prepared by the ARRL VEC) had a number of "distracting" questions and correct answers that required some careful study, both before and during the test. I have nothing against that, having seen that thing in many different similar-format written tests before but the theory material by itself may not be enough. I never saved any QPC pools in the past so I can't compare old versus new. While questions on radio theory were (few) straightforward, I had to review a number of detailed areas concerning space operations and data/packet modes and practices to feel fully confident before taking the tests. Regulations have changed slightly since a decade ago (from my 1995 five-volume Title 47 set concerning Part 97) but those must, in my opinion, be memorized beforehand. In actual practice there are many versions of bandplans in the form of charts (I like Icom's nicely-colored ones) to use when operating. Actual numbers as used in the tests need memorization to pass them correctly. 73, Len AF6AY |

You'll probably pass, but you would get some of the band and privilege edges questions wrong if you read the old pool questions and took the new test. Which is why I suggested a quick review of Part 97! 73, de Hans, K0HB |

There have been no changes in radio theory, and very minor rule changes which affect Extra, so if you understand the material, any study guide going back to 1990 or so should work just fine, supplemented by a quick review of Part 97. A book that old (pre-2000) would also need to be supplemented by the companion Advanced study guide as the current exam (since 2000) combines these two groups of material. Back when these were separate, the most difficult theory questions were on the Advanced exam. Dee, N8UZE Dee, N8UZE |

You could also download the pool online and give it a look. QRZ has all the tests, given and graded for you to let you know how your rote memorization effort to pass the test is coming along: http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl Larry -- .. |

Of course, if a person rote memorizes the tests, they might be in for an umpleasant surprise when the take the real ones - certainly the Extra. - 73 de Mike KB3EIA - |

Another test practice site is www.aa9pw.com/radio/java/index.html By the way, I found no surprises on test element 4 in regard to memorizing the regulations, especially the bandplans. :-) 73, Len AF6AY |
