/////////////////////////////////////////// Ask An Elmer! [10/31/2014] Posted: 31 Oct 2014 12:02 AM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...lmer_10312014/ Heres your chance to ask questions that you think may have been asked before, or that might not require their own thread. This is a great place to get answers about choosing or operating first radios, as these threads often get ignored due to their frequent reappearance on the front page. Youll have lots of eyes here. No question is a dumb question! If youre still worried your question sounds dumb and you would prefer not to ask in public, PM the mods! Upvote good questions and good answers. It makes improves their visibility! Im working on building a wiki page with a list of all previous Elmer Thread discussions, sorted by topic. Until then, search this subreddit using "Ask an elmer" for previous threads. submitted by AutoModerator [link] [9 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Satellites Carrying Amateur Radio Payloads Among Those Lost in Launch Explosion Posted: 31 Oct 2014 08:42 AM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ayloads_among/ submitted by St0nkingByte [link] [comment] /////////////////////////////////////////// After 7 years it finally happened... Posted: 31 Oct 2014 12:56 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ally_happened/ I figured Id pop in and introduce myself at least. Im usually very much a lurker on Reddit, and probably still will be, however I like to be friendly! After 7 years my friend (Extra/VE and best man from my wedding) finally convinced me to take my tech to at least get started. Started studying on the 14th to take the exam on the 18th, the goal being that my buddy could sign my cert, rather than my waiting until the next session. Managed to spend a lot of time reading up and passed with only 3 wrong. For giggles I tried the general as well, missed 17, so a bit of studying left to do for that I suppose... 2 days ago my call was finally posted (11 days post VE exam), but Ive yet to TX. Currently rocking the UV-82 and mostly listening to the Lowell, MI repeater, though Ive been poking my head in the Grand Rapids IRA as well. Ive currently got my vanity application in for approval, so heres to hoping! *goes back to lurking* submitted by Gizmokid2005 [link] [7 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// CW Headset Recommendation Posted: 31 Oct 2014 01:27 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ecommendation/ Hi everyone. I currently use apple ear buds for my cw work and they are ok. Looking through the boards, I found that people liked military grade H-251As due to them being non- HI FI. Here is the spec sheet: http://radionerds.com/images/0/00/H-...tion_sheet.pdf My question is for those of you with more electrical knowledge than I, would there be a way to lop off the U-229 connector and switch it to a 3.5mm plug for use on a TS-480 or KX1? Worried that the Ohms might not convert. Right now with a 3 month old, money is tight, so I was not going to buy a Heil or $100 plus set of cans right now with a new 3 month old around. Would anyone have any other suggestions that they might think would work well? submitted by NJ_WOP [link] [2 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// FRN for test? Posted: 31 Oct 2014 01:02 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio.../frn_for_test/ I was reading though the forums on eham and saw some people talking about needing a FRN to take the tests... I thought all I needed according to the ARRLs info on where I go to take my test, is a photo ID. I got the thing to turn on, but the receiver just puts out loud static. To troubleshoot that, the manual just says "you need to verify the local oscillator is operating. Use another VHF receiver or a frequency counter to verify oscillator operation." I have no idea what this means, though I know the local osciallator is the orange thing int he bottom of the third picture. Then it says to make sure the 10.24 MHz crystal oscillator is running, but I dont have an HF receiver to check it (though, again, no clue how that would work either.) Finally, it says to check the solder joints, though Ive checked lots of them and they seem to be working, I included a few pics to see if anything is obviously amiss: http://imgur.com/a/ykBOn#0 Any ideas out there? I tried adjusting the oscillator while there a net on last night, but I couldnt get the thing to do anything other than put out loud static. Any idea where to start? submitted by chandler404 [link] [10 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Measuring voltage from radio's audio out Posted: 30 Oct 2014 10:10 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ios_audio_out/ Hi all, Im trying to measure voltage from my radios audio out to determine when its on (receiving) and when its silent. Using a digital multimeter on DC voltage, I see an initial reading of ~3V when the radio is receiving. However, this value slowly drops as I continue the measurement. It seems like by measuring it, Im causing the voltage to drop. Can anyone tell me what Im doing wrong? (My ultimate goal is to wire this up to an Arduino to tell me what % of the time its receiving a signal.) submitted by completefudd [link] [5 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Am I doing something wrong? Yaesu FT-857D & LDG AT-100ProII + Y-ACC Cable Posted: 30 Oct 2014 05:01 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...su_ft857d_ldg/ I have This Tuner for my FT-857D radio. I also have the Y-ACC Cable. My understanding is I should be able to go to the frequency which I want to transmit on... press the "Tune" button on the tuner for more than .5 seconds, and it should put the radio into CW mode, low power, transmit, and tune. However, This is not the case. . . I originally purchased my tuner near the beginning of September. I recall it working 1-2 times, then it stopped working. LDG said to send it in for repairs. Over a month goes, and the notes on the repair state Unit is not repairable. Please Replace so I got a new tuner and cable. I hook it up today - same deal. I can transmit manually (FM or something with noise on it) and it will then tune... but if I try to use the Tune button, I get no results but "NO RF" LEDs. . . . . I performed a master reset on the radio to make sure it wasnt the radio either... same results. Halp! edit: It looks like the ACC jack on that radio is bad ![]() neocharles [link] [21 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// RF Connectors: Pros and Cons? (SMA, BNC, MCX, N-type, etc.) Posted: 30 Oct 2014 04:31 PM PDT http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...mcx_ntype_etc/ Ive been tinkering with a little RTL-SDR dongle with an MCX connector, and Im in the process of building a planar disc antenna, which naturally leads me to ponder the many RF connector types. What are some of the reasons you would choose one type over another?
